Fuel system upgrades
April 21, 2007 01:50AM
So in removing the massive brake booster tonight I snapped one of the stock fuel lines on my Merkur. Turns out, they're plastic. Sweet huh. Anyhow, I'd planned to leave the fuel system alone until I got around to putting in a fuel cell so it makes sense to improve it while I'm replacing parts.
So I was thinking I'd replace the fuel rail with this.

The nice thing with this part is that it has AN ports already so no need to braze. It also has an extra port to use for fuel pressure regulator or fuel test port.
Then get a different fuel pressure regulator. And replace from the factory hard lines to the FPR and fuel rail with AN-6 lines. This way I'll just have a few lines to run when I upgrade the stuff at the back (pump, filter, tank.)
Anyone have a recommendation for FPR?
Unfortunately, the fuel components were the only parts removed from the junkyard Merkur. Well, not really. Once I saw what little amount of effort it took to break the factory return line, it should probably be a mandatory replacement on these cars.

PS> Cage is done and it is sweet! Tomorrow is bondo and interior cleaning/paint prep day.

The other thing I'm not sure about is going back to the stock hard lines and if I should try to braze on an AN fitting to each, which would require removal of them, or if I should just get the appropriate diameter AN braided line and clamp it.

Or just go cheap and replace with subaru lines and clamps from the junkyard. Cost, free.

Grant,

If t'were me, I'd go with Teflon barided stainless and the fittings. Brazing can crack under vibration, 'specially in the area of the engine. Using boneyard fuel lines stirkes me as being pretty univerisally unwise; you just don't know what's been in them for how long (water = pin holes).

Use 3/8" hard lines from Auto-zoo or whatever,
inverted flare for intra line fittings, flare to "Tube nuts" on the end and use a male/male union to het a male thang to do you actual fuel hoses from car to motor.
TIG the -6 fitting onto the rail, lessin' you're really good with braze and ya clean it up afterwards.
