volvo 240 quicker steering

This got posted on tborks so sorry for the cross post. I just wanted feedback from guys that regularly build this stuff and romp on their cars.
Its a zf rack from a xr4ti.

I went a little wild with the welder and did three liberal passes.
The steering wheel spins nicely and doesnt appear to bind. The rag joint doesnt have to flex more than a degree. Kind of weird. Almost seems intentional. The rack fits too well.

The XR rack is 2.6 turns vs the stock 3.7 or whatever. You guys prolly know better than me.
It required changing the mounts to the crossmember, a different steering shaft setup, a rag joint instead of the stock ujoint, and tie rods from a volvo 960. The trickiest part was coming up with a rag joint that is 17mm whatever spline on the rack side to the stock 3/4"-48 stock shaft. I could have used the stock shaft but I opted for this one which is really nothing special. I did this because with the rag joint, I figured thered be an extra slop factor. The shaft lines up pretty well with the pinion so I figured a degree or so of flex wouldnt be too tough on the raggie.

Heres the shaft end of the rag joint. Its a borgeson universal 3/4"-48 sleeve welded to the end of the xr rag joint coupler dealie.

Awesome. That looks like the early smooth body XR rack, which was 3.8 or something. The "Waffle" or ZF rack is 2.6. I will probably be doing this upgrade in the future.

I think its the zf rack but the later one with a steel cylinder. It might have a wger on it somewhere. Its definitely 2.6 turns. I guess there were two generations of it. The earlier one is all aluminum. I have one in the basement. It had a little wear on the inside just around dead center. I found this in a 1989.

Anyone know how different a "turbo t-bird" rack is from the merkur one? They seem more plentiful and have 2.5 turns lock to lock.

Some giant gross horrible thing and Turdboat T-birds aren't that common...
Ask Ryan to pull you one. Flip him a few bucks to pull 'em, he just about lives in Bay Are Pull-a-parts... He's just finishing his disertation and pull cool shit off Fords and Toilettas and grafting them onto his 240 let's him transcend the mundane and reach a higher level of enlightenment and a greater degree of sideways...

Last we spoke there seemed to be 2-3 Xratties in that yard and he said there was another in the other yard he was just in..
Ask him, he's a nice guy..
