Another possibility for Xratty LSD?
May 25, 2007 02:31PM
I was looking at this from the merkur forum:

http://forum.merkurclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9192&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

A stock Xratty casing, GM 7.5 diff (minor shimming to fit) with $325 Eaton clutch type limited slip setup.

I'm quite sure that a setup like JVL has planned using the Toyota Supra diff would be better...but is there any strong reason for this not being at least a real option?

Many years ago I looked at the GM 7.5 and my memory says while the spline count and diameter was OK the spline profile, specifically the PA, pressure angle wasn't.
Fords is a 45* angle, or 90 included angle, and it seems the GM was a 30* or 60* included angle. You can shove a 30* into a 45 hole but it ain't right.

Little details like this are too boring for the boys on the Intra-web to bother with.
Did it at Randy's Ring and Pinion when he was a one man place maybe in 88-89.

Of course I could be wrong.

Also the diffs avaiable are weenie 2 pinion diffs with very little preload.

Not to mention, there still isn't jack shit for final drive options. Though there may be a 5.1 available out of Europe for the bargain price of around $600.

You have to grind out the case just to get the thing in there. I've been apart of one of those swaps, not worth it, even to us ghetto engineers in Spokane. And they don't last that long.

What about a Ford 9" or it's baby brother, the 8"?

You're kidding right? But yes lots of guys are doing the 8.8". Same weak side gears at the 7.5" domestic. The domestic 7.5" IRS diff, like from a T-bird or Couger, is easily doable - the whole pumpkin. But it doesn't hold a candle to the Toyota diff. John really thought this swap out. If you had any of these options sitting side by side to look at......wait doesn't John have pictures of this somewhere?......you would see why it's the best. Especially cause John has done all the work/homework.
