The plugs wont show detination because the ecu may have pulled timing to stop the detination. The ecu may also richen the fuel. because it will also lower the chance of detination.

If your car reads knock it could be from noise but it doesnt usually pull timing for long periods. Im fairly familier with Subaru ecu's not celicas so i dont know how your ecu's saftey devices work.

I have heard of honda racers- the NASA h2 guys, having similar issues and it came down to bad (stock) placement of the ign coil. The coils were good, they would just heat soak and cause similar problems. I work with one tonight and will ask him for details.

I seem to remember relocation and brake duct-like cooling does the trick. Worth a mock up and test, I would think.

I am not familiar with your car, if you have coil packs, I dont know if any of this applies... just an idea.
