So, if we were to add some ridges running front to rear, should they just be small square, u-channel, or angle laid to make a V?
Is the welding of the material negate the benefit of added rigidity?

Can either material be bent with a sheet metal brake?

Not all cars are created equal.

Here's one from Subaru S12 World Car

Yes, and I bet that is a whole lot lighter and a whole lot more expensive then the one pictured above. But club level guys have to make their skidplate and their car last for a whole lot more than one or two events so compromises are acceptable. Different horses for different courses as they say.
That was just an example for welds on skid plates. I for example have 2 strips welded longitudinal for added stiffness. Some people add sidewalls others do other things, it just depends on the need.
