Tire Wear
June 09, 2013 11:27PM
so at STPR last week i ran my first set of new tires, medium compound Dmack's. i only ran them on saturday, for ~90 stage mi. and ended up tearing off some of the inner tread blocks on the front tires. pressures were 32psi hot. alignment is good, checked before and after rally. now i know the roads there are very hard packed, with tons of grip, but i was suprised to see tread blocks ripped off of new tires on a low power leisurely driven golf. is there something I'm missing? is this the norm for Dmacks? new tires? like i said it was my first time on virgin tires, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if there is some explanation for it.

thanks!

look good for 90 SS miles on those roads.
Why such astronomical pressures?
On my widdle Saab with widdle V4--ya know? Cast iron, pushrods, only 44.5mm intakes, 38mm exhausts 11.3 comp, mild, you know---I ran 23 psi on Michelin 14/62 x 15 and we were kinda doing leisurely driving too, even if it was top 10 OA....

Why so high?
Got some spasmodic trick alignment (found off the Intra-webz)?

less camber, slide more...you should be eating up the outside edges more than the insides unless you have a bunch of Torque.

we run under a degree of camber

Pressures were on the high end of what I found on the interweb, and matched the answer I got from someone else running dmacks. I wasn't sure if I would start debeading tires if I ran lower pressures. Ill drop them for the next event.

Alignment specs are from VW. I was thinking less camber bc the outer edge of the tires does look brand new, I just wanted to check before I started making up alignment specs. Ill dial out some camber then.

Oh and def not from lots of TORKS unfortunatly...

Thanks.

they look about right (correct?). These have strp, maybe some BRS, a couple rallyx's and who knows what else I don't really keep track. They can chunk a little bit but seem to hold up as well as anything else. we've been running around 27psi as of late.

your wear looks more even across the tire, and you arent missing entire tread blocks. you drive considerably harder/faster than me also. the inconsistent wear across my tires must be from too much camber, the outside of the tires just arent doing enough. high pressures prob didnt help either...

Zero toe, and 35' of camber is the spec, toe was on and camber within 2' of that.

Running a Queefe...

I ran the rally cross the next day that ran on the same 'Super Special' field outside wellsboro. We got rained out And ran a bit in the mud, But Ive got some similar scoops/chunks missing out of my drive tires. This was on snows in the 'ol 240.

The mud here had lots of little rocks and shards of that blue slate stuff you'll see up around there.
I cant help but wonder if you get em the same way I did.

I'm assuming those are front tires?

Seem like a lot of wear, at least compared to my tires. I run medium compound Michelin (were BFG last year) and they hold up great. Although, my front tires are just turning and my rear tires moving the car.

I get more rear wear than front, but nothing like what you have.

Does seem odd for you to wear out the inside more than the outside.

When I had a really old set of hankooks, they would tear blocks off like your tires did. I know you said the tires were new, but were these sitting a long time?

The outside of the tire looks like what i would mostly expect. But the inside of the tire looks a little bit like this area is being overloaded a bit.

I'd look at camber, too much camber will mean you are putting all your power and probably more importantly braking through this section of tire.

Believe it or not, toe can also do this as well.

Did you swap tires front/rear at service?? you should!

Having said all of that, I do not know the roads at STPR....which makes a huge difference. We have a road up here in Ontario (GCFR) which will KILL a full set of tires in about 50km. It is soo packed down that you will regularly hear tires squeeling on fast cars.

32 PSI is not horrible, but maybe a little bit high if it is hot/dry, which it was at STPR no? I probably would have suggested around 30 HOT....but 2 PSI won't break the bank.

As for the age on any DMACK in North America...they will be fresh, I'd guess the absolute worst case is 16 months since the date of manufacture. Which by no stretch of the imagination is old!
