Next question...

Those fancy rods have an oil squirter to cool the piston... just on one side. Should they be on the exhaust side, or does it matter?

every conn rod I've ever seen has a specific side that faces toward the front of the engine - might be identified by a cast mark or the shape of end cap, or if you're really lucky there might even be an arrow (check the manual, it's kinda important). if you're talking about the little hole angled towards the side on the top of the big end of the rod, that's for cylinder wall lubrication. piston squirters look more like this and tap directly into one of the main oil galleys

yes. .. and finally found a pic with the rods in. no arrows, but the "f" cast on the end reads with the front of the motor up...

puts the squirter on the intake side which I gather is the thrust side. I need a manual on this thing....

One each way, run hard for 100k km and then accurately measure resultant bore wear.
