Hella Light Comparison
June 23, 2013 02:16PM
Looking at a variety of Hella light kits for a 1987 Volvo 240 and was wondering pros/cons vs. price for the following kits.

http://www.amazon.com/HELLA-5750941-12-Volt-55-Watt-Halogen/dp/B001TWD5GY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1372014698&sr=8-2&keywords=Hella+Fog+Lights

http://www.amazon.com/HELLA-005750971-Series-Halogen-Lamp/dp/B002MOAHCI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372014698&sr=8-1&keywords=Hella+Fog+Lights

http://www.amazon.com/HELLA-005750991-12-Volt-55-Watt-Halogen/dp/B00318JTCS/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1372014698&sr=8-7&keywords=Hella+Fog+Lights

Ranges from $68.??-$101.99 and all sit at 12V/55-Watt ...So where is the difference to justify $40+? And is there any of these kits that will not work with my '87 Moose?

Two of the three are fog lights, one is driving. Black magic stuff is a gimmick.

If you're looking to drill holes and mount on your bumper or a light bar, yeah, they'll fit anything.

And, _________________ welcome. Are you really looking for lights that work or is it a fashion statement, a 'rally look" you're after?

Cause all those are on the small size for real use...
I prefer 2-3 Bosch "190 Knick" or "Big Knick" but the situation is grim in USa..

Where are you located? And what's your name? ( look up under the "headline" and there's something that says "Read this first Newb"... you want to read that)

Hello__________,

LED light bars are becoming the norm on rally cars these days. I love mine.

If you want the rally look, then what ever.

Not really. People mostly use them as fill-ins for close stuff. They're cheap and have low power consumption, but still don't have the penetration of HIDs.

To the OP: Fiasco's reply is spot on, although I'd add to that by recommending that you run them off a relay. And yeah, please fill out your profile. For a minute or two, I thought you might be a troll for some ebay sales.

Looking for functionality over style, but don't have major $$$ to spend. Main concern right this second is getting some extra lighting on narrow roads over the 1200 miles to Portland, but entry/stock level rally comps are in the back of my mind.

I can't say why those are different. They are all the 500 series (besides for 2 being Fogs and 1 being driving beam)

I bought 4 similar model #500 HELLA lights a few years ago as disposable lights for when I went to Mexico, since I didn't want to take my good HELLAs. They are OK, nothing great. I guess if you are on a really tight budget they will work. The old saying of "you get what you pay for" applies.

If you are young, your eyesight is good, you don't have much cash, and you think you'll only use these lights for maybe a few stage miles, then ok.

If you're looking for cheap, try some GE Aircraft landing spot beams in a Par36 (utility light) housing - total cost < $25 ea and @ battery voltage they are rated to throw 110,000 CP

Dave Coleman has experience with those landing spot beams. They do get HOT so don't be surprised when you go through a water splash and crack the lens.

A friend had a set of 4 landing lights on his car. They required good wiring, could only be turned on under way due to heat and the beam pattern was crapy. They were however bright as hell.

Wolf LED has some good options. The 6 and 10 inch light bars are damn bright for the cost. They don't currently sell the round ones Laughlin had on his car, those are still a prototype.

I be sorry as a muthafucka I did, still sorry I did n' hustled ta peep what tha fuck I holla'd a lil' bit better, or at least try to.
