on how to get the front support out without messing it up. I unbolted the fenders/front where i can see. But both are glued in like they were preparing for an a-bomb. Not worried about the drivers fender. Its rusted out at the bottom. Id like to keep from destroying the inner well/horn on the drivers for sake of reusing on the rally car.

Keep in mind I do work on Euro trash but, most core supports of that vintage are spot welded in so a spot drill and hammer/chisel may be your friend. The new VW stuff does have a bolt in core support tho, kinda neat. I'd try to con Sean or Robert into looking at stuff before you get too carried away, both the donor and rally car. Maybe lunch or beer or both...

Ok, thanks Gene. I was wonder if they did. Ill keep scraping away and see if i can find the spot welds. I thought the whole car was held together with this stuff till i found bolts hidden under it.

That looks like Mk2 Golf. Front support should just be bolted in, two bolts each side, with rubber bumpers.

Any reason you wouldn't want to turn the core support into a removable affair?

Nice cars like the mighty Saab 96 always came that way. Hood off in 2 seconds, whole front sheet in 2-3 more, radiator in less than 5,..

All cars should be so nice.

Oh, nevermind. I looked at it again with my head turned sideways. Definitely a Mk1 Rabbit. As far as I know those front members are welded in on all of them. Bleah.

spot weld drill bit will be your friend, pull the motor and trans and check the firewall for damage, extend the cage out to the strut towers, plate the strut towers.

FTFY. Ugh, I hate the look of crumpled metal.

I do wonder if you'd be better off getting it on a frame machine or at least a big ol' I-beam and a couple Hazard Fraught Tool Port-a-Powers, getting it "close enough" and plating over the de-crinkled bits. But I'm a moe-ron who thinks on a LeMons budget.

talked with a couple folks. after I do what Tom mentioned, Im gonna take it to a frame shop and just tell them to get it close. then see where i need to splice in.

I cant seem to find spot weld bits. Home depot, lowes, Harbor freight. Everytime I can go by tool town its closed.

Ive got the donor beam, ive just got to get in in the car.

Also the skid plate is mangled. thatll be an interesting bit of fun.
