Yah, I used to think that too.

Confused Xerox copiers rewrite documents, expert finds
Xerox multifunction machine Machines similar to this model were swapping around numbers. David Kriesel found that copies he made of construction plans had altered room dimensions. Other users have replicated the problem, which has been blamed on faults with compression software used by several Xerox models.

The company has not yet issued a fix for the problem, but it told the BBC it was preparing a statement. Mr Kriesel said he worried that numbers could be altered on invoices and other important documents....

Slightly edited, see the link for the original.

To be somewhat helpful - my bet is on the missing voltage. I'd be looking for the voltage going into the coilpacks to see what it was.

You def know when you drop a valve lol. Makes a helluva racket as it bounces around in the fire hole.

Broken vavle spring not valve. They uasualy still have some seat pressure but give up when there asked to close the valve at higher revs. Its common on cars with lots of valve seat pressure. Subarus use tiny briggs and straton valve springs so it is probably not common with so little seat pressure but the symtems fit.

Lol I know you said spring. My answer was specific in nature to his EJ. Even on the super high lift dirty V8 crap I've torn down in the past with mangled valve train, even one lazy(broken) spring makes a gnarly squeak as it binds. But you're totally correct. Dual spring setups with one busted will usually save your ass too vs shot peening your combustion chamber lol.

#1. Revs to 6500 without missing under no load.
#2. Old plugs removed a couple of weeks ago (after problem started) gap good at .030.
#3. Pulled one new plug and it is gapped good at .030 (pain to pull the others at this point).
#4. ECU reset (even though battery is always disconnected because of drain) did no good.
#5. Ignition switch swapped out and still have a drain somewhere.
I noticed dash lights are dim. I agree it's electrical (drain) somewhere.

That's all for tonight.

Go through the entire electrical system. Mainly from battery to main fuse area.

We had a loose ground coming off the battery and would idle and rev fine. Under load, it would spit and sputter over 3k. It was miserable. Since you relocated the battery, even though you moved it back i'd say something in that system is your culprit. Sounds like a weak ground somewhere.

I'd suggest checking the alternator leads too. Had trouble with the Focus in Mexico and after stuttering through the 1st half of the rally we resolved it with an additional direct cable from the alt to the battery. The stock set up had the cable from the alt to the starter and then to the battery.

The power to the coils is pretty direct. The only way I can see a miss from electrical would be in the coil power or ground. every thing else shouldnt make an engine miss. 12v at the coil is plenty to have a strong spark.

high rev miss I found most common is way to much fuel. weak spark or weak valve trane. (Valve float) I know theres many other ways but I would eliminate the easy ones first.

That reminds me your air intake from maf to turbo has no tears or leaks does it? Its not fuel cut your feeling is it? a tear will thorw off your tune enough to fuel cut.

I had an air cleaner once that closed the vent to carb wehn the engine got way up in revs it would suck fuel out the vent tube and flood the engine and make a miss. I know its not Subaru issue but good to know any ways. took many races to figure that out.

Did you clean the maf? Does it have catalytic converter, is it clogged?

Lots of additional grounds on the car and all of them are clean. Will look into Simons suggestion. No leaks/tears in intake. This is not the same as a fuel cut on rev limiter. Haven't cleaned the (new) MAF or tried another one I have. There've been 3 different MAFs in the car since this started happening. Metal substrate cat in exhaust 6 inches from the end. Pretty sure it's not clogged. Going to try another crank sensor tonight then start tearing apart the dash/wiring. Also going to try and check fuel pump volume over the weekend (already checked pressure).

Maybe check cam timimg. Ive seen them jump a tooth or 2 and still run.A quick stop or stall from locking up brakes is plenty to jump timing. Im afraid tearing your dash apart is going to be a waste of time. but hey what do I know about subarus. Thers no wires in the stock dash that need to be there for the engine to run. It comes from the floor out the firewall to the engine.

Except, I've got a short somewhere draining the battery which isn't going to help the situation. And I'm pretty sure it's under the dash, not in the engine compartment. And wiring under the dash does affect the engine management, ECU, etc. We've periodically blown fuses for the heater fan so that's an issue under the dash to be considered.

Before you tear apart the dash....have you thrown a multi meter inline and pulled fuses 1 by 1?
