Pros and Cons...

I saw this bit of cage detail in the photos from the Group B Quattro repro. I'm putting similar bars into the Mini cage, primarily to form a sturdy front upper shock mount.

What do you guys think about making them removable as shown in the pics?

I'm thinking it might be a bit less sturdy than welding but definitely easier to repair/replace should an unforseen tree jump out and bite me...

Thoughts?

Likely not a problem but is spending time to fab all the mounts and such now really that much better then using a saw and welding a bit back in the future (if it happens) really that much harder. Also if you hit something so hard as to damage the tubes will the welded bit of the cage not need repair? I would think nothing of cutting the tube and splicing it later in a repair as not a required bit of the cage.

So in other words you are doing a lot of work now to avoid a slim chance of doing slightly more work sometime in the future.

Just my thoughts.

Which GpB reproduction?

I was under the impression that the Audis used aluminum roll cages, which by necessity are bolt-in and probably bolt-together. Bolting the pieces together like in the photo would be necessary to be true to the original, in that context.

Hmmn, cage did appear to be a bolt together, link to the car was on another thread here, these guys had built a number of repro Audi racers in what appeared to be a two car garage, nice work.

Welded it is though, simpler & faster to fab as well as sturdier.

Thanks, Ted
