Oh dear, is one allowed to reference what serious high buck teams beginning with F did without a pile of trolls getting snippy?

See the blue crossmember-y looking thing just in front of the aluminum crossmember? Thats the sumpguard center support. Sump guard mounts to the red bar at the front and then to just aft of where the compression struts mount.

It is not bolted to the center support. there mouse pad glued to the bottom for rattle..

Its a brilliant design because it works on the priciple hat its hard to bend metal on edge, but easy when its flat..(Likewise tube can be strong but WAY strong in compression and tension)

Here a better view of the thing:
Genuine Ford part in the back, locally made part in front

Thet were available in "tarmac" normal and 'Acropolis spec" the difference being the part leaning on the vertical part: normal had a plate on the front, and "Acropolis" had it on both sides, tarmac had neither.

Bending on edge is a function of height so this thing is strong--and light.

Seems the principle about difficulty of bending something on edge escapes most people..

Here's what a serious high buck team starting with an S (or maybe a P I guess) did with their sump guard mounting:

Kinda hard to tell from that drawring, but heres a picture of something close.

But you want a vertical leg going from where the skid plate mounts to that rusty tube going up to the frame rail. Triangulation and all that.

I think this style is more easily replicated in someone's garage because you don't need a CNC laser, press brake, and aluminum welding capabilities. It may weigh a little bit more than the fancy aluminum ford piece, but can probably be built for a fraction of the price.

Skid plates take a huge beating. Most of the hits they recieve are from going over things (big rocks), rather than the car falling out of the sky onto them, so its important to have a good "ramp" angle at the front of the plate.

I was thinking of that one... come around the corner and theres a rock the size of a bowling ball right in line. 3/8 alum plate and underlying 1x2 steel frame earned its keep there.

I'm gonna have to loom under my impreza and see if that type could be adapted.
I have something similar to what John showed on my Impreza. Made of 1" square tubing, it goes across, comes up inside the frame rails and then out and bolts on to the rear bolt holding the bumper beam in place. Skid plate is mounted to radiator support, the above mentioned support and the small plate (jacking point?) on the cross member. Has worked well for me.

I drill the mounting holes through the skid plate to be oversized and use a large fender washer on the bolt. Bent the crap out of a couple of plates from hitting large rocks but never bent the mounts that way. It has it's limits though.

My skidplate is bolted in front via a pair of engine mounts for some give there.... In the rear of the plate on the rear of the front suspension cross-member it is bolted up with big fasteners and fender washers.

Big thick plate that was originally intended for a Scirocco. It has served well in the Volvo and taken some impressive hits.
