Homemade top mounts
September 29, 2013 03:07PM
Okay, so any specific things to look for?
Basically was looking at a weld in cup that comes with a snap ring and then a 3/4" spherical bearing and weld plate to that for a top mount with modified caster/camber. Any suggestions for source of said parts?
Here's what I was looking to get.
Bearings
http://steinjager.com/shop/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=3520&search=uniball

Bearing cup
http://steinjager.com/shop/index.php?route=product/product&search=uniball%20cup&page=2&product_id=24053

Then use a spacer to downsize to the pin diameter for a stock BMW pin.
Why? Because if we make them ourselves we only get one penalty lap. If we buy something or it looks too fancy, we get 3 or more. Obviously for our Chumpcar but could also be used to determine top location for a fancier custom top mount for rallying.

try a bigger bearing so the shit isn't overloaded and maybe lasts a while..

Unless you mean to make something for ricers and autocrossers

Any suggestions? Any you sell? I thought 3/4 to 1" inner seemed close to the jvab bearing size...

Only suggested it about 10,000 times: the size in YOUR top mounts.
7/8" which is .875"
Ford and Subaru used 22mm ID...22mm is .866 but costs more.

Work quick cause I'm carving some offset ones for DaveK this week.

Yeah? Or do you want your bearings to be bronze like the ones in your link.

Any penalty for reinforcing the OEM shock tower and slotting it to get desired camber/caster?

Nothing too fancy here. Steinjager bearing cup placed into a piece of steel (1/2" in this drawing, way too big. 1/8 or 3/16 likely plenty.) 110 mm PCD. Rotate on direction to increase caster and reduce camber. Bearing cup can be located at max distance from centerline before interfering with body shell or at a specific location to obtain the desired camber and caster for the setup used. It's not a hard or expensive piece to make and already have easy idea for how to make a trial version that allows us to test different locations for the pin.
The little triangle gussets were just for show. Might put a few in, but not that many.
