I used to run works Kevlar sump and tank guards on my Seat Cupra in the late 90's early 00's so good and relatively light! They had a thick epoxy outer coating so didn't get chewed up so badly on gravel.

Yes, it's a Ranger.
Xr4Ti, it is rwd and was made in Germany.

Some guys make little skidplates, some are just brave.

Nothing. Been in about 80 rallies with no protection for either in a variety of RWD cars. Got one little dent in a driveshaft once but no bends. Front and rear control arms, and things like radius rods and cross members and exhaust systems, are what take the beatings.

ALL my friends but one were all RWD guys and back when we would go "playing' 2-3 times a month we'd do 150-180 miles a night. Nobody did a thing.

We dinged a few cases but the worse scars came from reverse back from wash-outs or dead ends where we couldn't turn around so we're backing maybe a little too fast WHAM (airborn) ..

Its like you said: things perpendicular to direction of travel or in clear THINGS STICKING OUT is what TENDS to suffer.

Fortunately never backed into anything..,,,but I am not dead yet so that possiblity is still there!

BTW, the OP mentioned bolt heads; I've had all sorts of bolts holding up skid plates. As long as they stay good and tight and flat & snug up against the bottom of the plate, all that happens is a bit of wear on the heads. On a rally like Maine (NEFR), they can get some good grind marks on them from the granite rocks.

If they get ground down a bit to where they might be hard to remove in a quick service, OR, more importantly, if they loosen or the heads get a bit cocked, THEN replace them. A loose or cocked bolt head is the only time you might have a problem shearing one off. Otherwise, don't take the time to recess them; a grade 5 or 8 and a good washer between them and the skid plate, a good tight fit, and you're good to go. It might be more of a problem a the Baja.....but we aren't doing the Baja.

Not sure this is helpful but this is the only picture I have of our skidplate frame on the Golf
