Rally car says, "Merry Christmas!"

Drained the 2 quart gearbox:

I'm now even less surprised that they finished their last event with fewer gears than they started...

Fewer forward-speed ranges... more "gears"...

(or at least pieces of gears!)

Just a little dent in the header:

Ok, maybe not so little:

Everything but the engine mounts are unhooked - time to round up a hoist and get this lump outta there, at least temporarily!

You can repair those dents in the header ya know...And maybe you better think about double skinning and making a skid for the things, eh?

Recommended method for fixing 'em? Probably gonna try the water + freezer (or leaving them outside...) approach for a bit.

Definitely thinking about double-skinning 'em. they're covered by the skidplate, so gotta figure out why it's not doing its job.

Gonna need Oxy-Acetylene torch, rosebud tip and a maybe half inch bar.
You look where the baddest dents are drill a hole on the back side roast the dents till bright orange and pound them back out...
Then weld up the hole carefully. Gotta get it hot, gotta hit it...done it on bike expansion chambers. Works pretty damn good.

No, the big crack(s) is on the left one, right where the two halves meet.

There absolutely is a crack on the right bell housing though. Hopefully will be able to have a bud zap that back together. "Luckily", it's just on one of the very bottom mounts, so it's not the end of the world if it can't be fixed - nothing's going to leak out of that crack.

One of these things

is not like the other

Funny thing is, that's better than I expected it to be. eye popping smiley (Was lead to believe that maybe only 1st and 4th were intact. Turns out a bent up shift linkage will do that to ya...)

Yes, those are gear teeth in the bottom of the case.

Luckily, I can pull all the parts out of the cracked case, and swap them into the good case (with the buggered internals). But, I'm seriously thinking of just picking up one of the other transmissions (ITR/Del Sol VTEC/99-01 Si) that I'm planning on running long term instead... Tweak my clutch pedal to be hydraulic, get one new transmission mount, and I should be good to go - aside from actually finding the transmission.

beginning to really understand some of the build vs. buy tradeoffs...

"hey, let's splice these things into the wiring harness such that there's no physical way to remove the harness without cutting either sheet metal or the wiring..."

eye rolling smiley

(yes, these sorts of considerations are a bit more obvious when there's nothing left in the engine bay...)
