Parts sleuth! (unknown wheel hub)
November 05, 2013 01:11PM
Anybody know what this hub might be from at first glance?

I have 8 of these on a machine that we are rebuilding. They have a suspicious 5 bolt pattern. The machine will eventually be a bottle rinser that captures bottles in a set of gripper belts, flips em upside down, shoots water in em' and then uprights them again so mice and dust and poop will theoretically be removed from your bottle before the beer goes in it.

Of course the people who originally built this fine piece of machinery put a ridiculous markup on what looks like chevy parts bin bits so i am trying to source them elsewise.

Dims and piccys for your edification

If you cannot figure it out, just find something that is roughly that height from the mounting-flange and use that. You can surely drill/weld/grind to fit. You are already "re-engineering" it, buy something common and cheap. Buy spares.

2.26" = ~57mm: is not that Honda hub-bore size? (mem'ry here)

No, wait - Honda used 4 on 100mm. Duh.

Bingo Bango! That's the hub on the rear beam of the rally Citation. Out of a late 80s Pontiac 6000 STE (rear disks)

I explored the 80s gm route and it looks close enough that we can make it work if the hub to mount distance is roughly the same or we can add a spacer. The plate on my hub is rectangular not angled like all the gm stuff though so i'm still on the hunt for a direct fit.

I'm going to a truck equipment / trailer store here in a bit i'll report back!

the hubs are in the center of two rotating assemblies (4 on each end) way crazy overkill for what they're doing but we don't want to re-engineer the damn thing and we'd rather not rebuild 8 of these puppies so we're hoping to find a direct replacement.

Not to worry they're not in contact with the beer in any way smiling smiley

EDIT: looked up the citation on rock auto and holy smokes it looks like a direct match. going to autozone to measure em up to confirm

Well, the citation hub was too big. 4.5 bolt pattern and the wheel side is too big to fit into the recessed area where it mounts. What i actually have is 5 x 4.25.

but the mount-side bolt pattern was correct as well as the offset between the two surfaces.

I bought one of the mid 80's gm fwd hubs like the autozone link above and it's an exact fit on the wheel side, and the mounting distance is correct. We'd have to remake 4 stainless weldments to fit the mount side, which would be easier than modifyiing the 8 circles to fit the citation hub. still, we'd rather keep it "stock" if we can still find the exact fit hub.

I need to buy 8 of these puppies. The original machine manufacturer conveniently has them on the shelf for $470 a piece, which is laughable for what should be a 70 dollar part.

And they probably paid $20 a piece for 1000 of them back in 1987. smiling smiley
I remember Sean saying Car Quest usually has good dimensions in their dealer part catalogs.

Hit the pavement! Go find the oldest small car shop you can find and start asking around! I bet you could figure it out within a day.

The Pontiac hubs on Oskar are 5 X 114.7 and rectangular, not trapezoidal.
