I don't know if its the proper way to do it, but I mounted mine under the dash in the middle of the column. I've seen otheres done in the engine bay, but it looks hot dirty and cramped in there.

I assume it would be to have a quicker ratio in the rack itself, but that is expensive. I always put them in the middle of the column, but that takes away the collapsible cloumn....I think I sit far enough away that hopefully the column wouldn't be a problem.

Not sure what the 'proper' way to do it is but htis is what we have done on two cars... Different variations but similar nonetheless.

That mk4 Golf sliding joint below the quickener to the rack gives plenty adjustment.
The splines only fit PAS racks though.

Look closely, this has been cut and re-welded with an mk2 PS rack spline on the engine bay side of the firewall.

Retained the mk4 column & adjustment because it makes it easier to keep the cruise control, headlight, signal, etc switches and plug right into the mk4 harness on the TDI swap.

I should have guessed there would be some extra fab work if you were involved. winking smiley
Could you not have used a late mk2 PAS or mk3 PAS rack? IIRC the splines are the same as mk4.

This might be useful for some with the VW affliction.
Top to bottom : (All RHD) Golf 1 manual rack, Rocco manual rack, Golf 2 PAS rack, Golf 2 manual rack.

Nice adjustable length Golf 4, then Polo 6K which is similar to mk3 Golf at rack end but weirdly joined to the column at the other.

Rack end spline differences.

Dunno. I took what I had and made it work. I had mk2 manual and PS, mk4 PS, and mk3 parts all laying around and NO, the are not compatible----mk4 rack end is different from mk2 PS or manual rack end. You have to mix & match, cut & weld unless you get lucky.

dunno how right it it but it works

Basically threw most of the stock junk away and made it all to suit. Put the seat where my feet could work the pedals, and nice rake, then hold the wheel where I wanted it and mount the quickener to cage and hot melt glue it all together.

Buttons on the wheel are for blinkers, high/low beam and horn.

the quickener in the subie. set up so the entire column can be swapped out with stock if there are any problems:

it has a minimal collapsing capability. another subie part that someone sells puts the quickener in the lower portion of the column which I don't like because there isn't much to keep the assembly from spinning except friction and a detent for the slider balls in the collapsing part.

Stomp down on the exhilarator and hold on to the wheel.

Mine looks a lot like Kevin's, except that I have mine rotated 90 degrees so the bulk of the quickener is over the gas pedal area, lot more room.

Who went with what ratios? I am torn between the 1.5 and 2.0 for the Volvo.
