I wonder if Ford's crate engines are engines pulled generically off of the assembly line, or if they are like GM crate engines where they didn't quite pass QA and can't be put into a production car.

You'd be amazed at the garbage GM has in their crate engines. They should be treated like an engine kit that is assembled for convenience of shipping, not really something that is ready to run. If you want to run it hard. Street rodders who putt putt their show cars from parking lot to parking lot rarely have issues.
