Our shop is less than a mile from that quad4rods place that makes the Duratec to T5 bell housing. A Duratec is still a great option for a rear wheel drive powered car. What is it, like 175 pound savings compared to stock Merkur engine. In my car that would take it close to 2400 pounds...

I didn't recall the title--or the line...but we saw it with the little girls several years ago.

You have no idea.

The turbos on the 3.5l look about the size of a GT15 and the exhaust manifolds are seriously tiny. And Ford says the engine is good for 420+hp but is derated for given chassis' characteristics. They have to worry about some moron towing in the desert mountains in August or something, so if they can't cram enough cooling in the truck they turn the power down.

What I can't seem to find an answer to is, does the new Ecoboost engine share a bell housing with the duratec that it is derived from.

Anyone know?

Pete. Are you talking about the truck v6 motor? This is the I4 motor that they are putting in the cars. It is has not exhaust manifolds. The Turbo just bolts to the head.

Looks like ford is set to release their new ecoboost 2.3L I4 in a RWD platform for the 2015 mustang.

Since Ford currently offers the FWD orientation of this motor as a crate motor offering this could be a good option for people building volvos or Merkurs.

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/12/05/2015-ford-mustang-engine-ecoboost-explained/

Looks like it has lots of good bits like forged steel crank and rods. Exhaust manifold that is integrated into the head. Piston cooling jets.

I'm happy Ford is offering this 2.3 liter engine in the Mustang, but the crate engine price is probably going be just too much ,when one can just plop in an "old school" Duratec on the cheap.

Here's the 2.0 version of the crate engine:

http://fordracingparts123.com/crate-engines/ecoboost/2-0l-ecoboost-engine-kit-m-6007-20t/?gclid=CKyshbT6o7sCFWQ6QgodKjgA2Q

-the $8000 msrp on a quick google search went down to $5850,so maybe some would deem it worth it,but I'm a cheap/broke bastich.

I thought these engines were supposed to have the ex mani cast integral to the head, but the pics on this site show otherwise:

http://www.enginelabs.com/news/2-0-liter-ecoboost-engine-has-8000-msrp/

Edit:

Found out there's a version 1.0 of the 2 liter ecoboost and a version 1.5 -2 liter
ecoboost.

So some versions of the 2.0 ecoboost (and apparently the 2.3 one coming out) have integral ex.manifold ,and some versions had separate ex manifold, as the v6 ecoboost engines do.

Also, since the v6 version was mentioned, this site appears to give a bit more detailed info on that engine/turbos mani's/etc:

I am, but the trend for everybody is smaller and smaller turbos.

Granted, they ARE doing amazing things nowadays with getting air to actually move through the tiny things. Heck, even 20 years ago, Audi went down a size to the K24 turbo (from the K26) and people have found that they have the same ultimate power capability, but the K24 spools more quickly. The K26 feels faster because it hits hard and late, but they both seem to top out around the 300hp mark.

My POINT is, I would not doubt that the turbo on the 2.3 is similarly dinky-tiny-looking but modern turbo wheels flow more than they used to. I keep hearing astounding things about the Borg-Warner turbos out today, seems like everyone is flocking to them. Big flow for a given frame size.
