Catalytic converter placement
March 19, 2014 09:06PM
So, the other day I smashed my Cat. and melted my exhaust feedback sensor at a RX, luckily it was after the event. So I was looking at places I could put a new one that would be somewhat protected. Underneath the rear bumper looks like a good spot but would it be leagal under RA or NASA? I tried looking it up but the only thing I found was something saying that yes I needed a Cat.. Nothing saying where it should be located (ie stock location or as close to headers as possible.)

Anyone have any knowledge on this?

Chris

End of the system...back bumper is where it should go, allowable for both RA and NRS. Find a steel core universal cat, avoid the ceramic cores.

The cat converter will get very hot so trim the plastic bumper skin back.

Chris, Thanks, all well here. I'll be around Olympus a bit. Really losing my desire to be involved these days, the boat is calling my name....

Try to find a cat like this http://www.amazon.com/Vibrant-7101-Round-Catalytic-Converter/dp/B00180329C 3 inch diameter and adapt it down to your existing pipe at the back. Your downstream sensor is only a tattle tale and can be left out ( CEL for sure) or re-installed in it's original location with a couple tricks and will work ok (no CEL).

If you get a bunch of grief up there I can do the exhaust here for you (no charge other than parts)

Pretty decent price.

Those are a good price. I am curious on the flow loss over the 300 cpi, vs 100 or 400 (most common).
Mandrel Bending Solutions has 100 cell per inch race cats that are $100. A little long I hear, but they seem well made (Robert G just looked at one, he can chime in).

I believe that NASA Rally Sport do not require a cat. However, your state inspection might require it and the car must be registered etc.

Some, like us, make the cat a swappable item depending on the event we run.

Gene I'll be sure to look for you at Olympus. Yeah it seems a boat would be tons more relaxing, hope you get to get out on the water.

I think my o2 sensors are already "fixed" but we will find out soon enough, if I have problems ill let you know. I was just going to clamp in the cat and also clamp in the filler piece where the old one was. I don't own a mig yet. Seems sucky to not weld it in but chances are untill i get a skid plate covering the exhaust pipe, its going to need to be replaced anyway.

Thanks everyone for the links I will purchase the Thunderbolt most likely. It is the shortest one @ 8 inches and thats about all the room I can afford. The other is 28"s.

Today I cut the Cat out. Dont know how it did it but the guts of it were completely packed in the exhaust pipe. Now to order the new pipe. waiting to reciev my new cat and figure out if I can install it without having to get someone to bend pipe. hopefully I'll have enough room to stick a band clamp on it.

Wow, that place is way cheaper.
Thanks guys for the help!

I was just saying on my FB page the other day that about a month ago I was working on my car and anything and everything that could've wrong did. I'd fix one thing and in the process something else would break. I went ape shit and super pissed off. My car broke me. Since then it's been much easier, probably due to an understanding that the car will always do what it wants to do and getting pissed ain't going to help. Kind of laughed about it the other day.
