Steering quickeners

So... I've been contemplating getting wanna those Howie steering quickeners for the corolla... Can that be installed on the stock steering column? Or, do I need to fabricate a new column?

The quickeners end up being about 7 or so inches long. You've got to loose some length from somewhere... and your going to be removing the steering lock anyways right?

Here's what I did for my golf: I dismantled the column. Cut the shaft the appropriate length. Welded the couplers to the shaft (drilled through the couplers and shaft to install steel pins). Then cut the outer tube. welded support brackets to them. Then bolted it all together with a nice piece of flat stock. Note I had to increase the thickness of the plate in the picture (1/8 to 3/16) as there was some twist in it - there's a suprising amount of force there.
