Welding fume question...
April 14, 2014 03:26PM
Okay, so I can sorta pull a MIG trigger okay. My only "training" was high-school shop a few decades ago, where I learned stick and gas.

I ran out of gas last fall, and didn't have time during biz hours to get more, so picked up some cheap flux core from C-tire. Worked okay, my first real experience with flux core...

This weekend I was doing some "house reno work" building a bookshelf and welding with the flux core the metal uprights. Bit of work on Sat. then great take-out Indian for dinner Sat night. Woke up feeling like, well, blaming the dinner. Felt not too bad by lunch, and back at the bookshelf (it will be awesome)... didn't eat dinner. Felt okay this morn

Working in garage, door open yesterday (not Sat., too cold). I've been mindful of fumes in the past, but is cheap flux core bad? Never had a problem before, but again never really used flux core for more then small tacks before this.

Did I just get the flu, or what?

Looked on welding web, and mixed message there.

Oh edit, fresh mild steel... ground down of all the scale.

Sounds like a paleo-illness called Vagasoreous Rex.
I got norwalk once, last meal was Indian. It sucked, few days of leaving a bucket on toilet and walking between bed and toilet.
I've felt gnarly after welding zinc plated steel.

You're always supposed to keep a window open/fan running when soldering with rosin core, can't imagine that welding with rosin core is somehow better in that respect. Don't think it'll give you GI issues though, more like breathing/headaches/nose issues.

I was TIG welding a bunch of stuff that wasn't very clean. The tubes still had oil on the inside from manufacturing. I wasn't feeling too hot afterwards. Light headed and sick to my stomach.

Really made me rethink who I have prep my material, and how much ventilation I need.
