Because sideways is slower? even more slower-er on tarmac?
It's one of the reasons I have little to no interest in competing at Tarmac events.

Not a rally fire, but my s2000 threw a rod (actually two of them) through the block at Sonoma Raceway. Was cornering through the esses so all the oil came out, and ignited on the exhaust. The rear view mirror was filled with the vision of a fireball.

Melted the rear bumper, and singed a little bit of stuff under the hood, thankfully no gasoline was involved.

So oil + exhaust can definitely burn in case there were any doubts.

Well, some excuses might include....

It was a deceptive corner.
It was/had just been raining making it all a bit greasy in spots. I looped it out again just a few corners after this one.
It was early on in the stage and tires were cold.
There was a lot of debris on the roads at times making it harder to commit.
We are all a bunch of pussies and drive accordingly.

Everybody WAS trying haha.....

From my Formula SAE days most of the car fires I have seen are due to messed up plumbing. Usually improperly assembled fuel lines running too close to HOT exhausts. Most of these situations can be avoided by 1) Thinking for 2 seconds about where shit goes 2) Making sure your fittings are assembled right and dont leak.
