XR Build Thread

Figured I would start a thread on my XR build. If not for the constructive criticism then just as a log for myself.


What it looked like right after the drive back from Ohio.


Just about stock everything.


Starting the tear down.


AC system out, exhaust off.


Car lived for 26 years with an autotragic. Also had a borla exhaust with a clogged cat.

Helpful hint: first you have to do some de-contructive criticism, cause you have to take a lotta shit apart..
Then we can start with the contructive stuff..

That's mainly "assemble in reverse order"

Car needed a new main seal so now was a good time to do it.




Traded the interior of the car (Black leather) for some suspenders. My buddy came to help strip everything out.


Type 9 to replace the C3 that came with the car


Car saw its first rallycross event two weeks after being driven home.


Pulled some spare panels off of the same car the type 9 was pulled from.


Tar paper removeale. Used dry ice to get most of it but I didn't get it cold enough and a lot of the adhesive did not chip up. Big jug of glue remover and a paint scraper took care of it.

Starting to look better.



Knuckles were pretty badly rusted and the wheel bearings were gone so a good cleaning and some paint were in order.

Just finished painting them 20 minutes ago.

With the amount of bolts I broke taking things apart I could have used some de-contructive criticism. Would have helped out a bit.

Also: Can you rally on an antique plate??! I didn't even consider it. Our province is very liberal when it comes to antiques (ie, none of this taking pictures don't like mods type of thing).

It looks like your interior didn't smell like mine did, which probably made the process nicer... even with broken bolts haha.

I don't see why not. The requirement is

"Vehicle must be over 25 years old and maintained for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades and other functions of public interest."

Pretty sure rally and rallycross fall within some of those categories.

Yeah the interior on this car was pristine. I feel bad gutting it because the original owner really cared for it well. But I needed suspenders so it has gone to another home.

The parts car that I took a bunch of stuff from on the otherhand reeked of rotten gas since the fuel tank was laying in the back seat. That was not a good smell.

Mine was mouse poop and urine smell. I ended up getting an old set of respirator cartridges and using those for the dismatling it was so bad. You'd have a headache after even being in it for more that 15 mins!

Started to clean these up today


After many New Hampshire winters they need some freshening.


John, any chance you have a spring seat on the shelf? This one took some encouragement to get off.


After a good bit of time with the wire wheel. They still need a good bit of work.

Mine too. Hint: Simple Green Automotive Cleaner/Degreaser mixed with a fair amount of Genuine 100% Pure Elbow Grease will make it smell Ivory Snow fresh. Doesn't help with the rebuild any though.

Any ideas on front spring rate? I was thinking 225-250lb/in for rallycross. But I figured I would consult those who know some things about some stuff before I resprung the car.

Current rears are 175lb/in.

Man I want to look at those and see about lengths and stuff now that its going to be straight gravel car....you're probably going to want different springs, those Ford 909 things are stiff.

Helpers 9.5 cm
