After braking the front mount and the arms of the front mount a few times we built a mount off the rear of the diff to the sub frame using subaru parts. Kept all the other mounts and life was good.

I think I had 5 mounts, I likely have photos somewhere on some computer but not this one.

I would really like to do the VWMS style mounts to the frame rails, but after seeing the pics of how much work it was for Wimpey to fab their mounts, it seems like it would be beyond my skills.

I'm amazed you haven't broken the cast aluminum mount (with the shift linkage)! That fails all the time even with the 5th gear housing to trans mount piece in place.

The trans side mount is relatively easy. The motor side more difficult. We made the trans side more difficult because the driver's side strut tower had a tear in it and needed repair/reinforcement.

Used a stock mk2 front front control arm bushing pressed into a tube welded to a piece of 'c' channel. weld on some ears and bracing to the body, add bolt. Leave all the other mounts in place....

With the missing 5th gear mount/brace I've never had any issues with breaking the trans case or shift linkage brackets. confused smiley

Keep you eyes peeled for the early mk2 Golf captive front mounts.
The one on the right is std mk2, and the one on the left has had the voids in the rubber filled with potting compound and the chassis bracket modified to fit a mk1 platform vehicle.



For the high cost of the Vibratechnics I am unimpressed, the threads appear to strip out easily and the alloy they are made of is prone to corrosion.

If looking for extra running gear location on a mk2, why not just add the engine and transmission mount from a mk1 and fabricated brackets off the chassis legs like the GrpA mk2s had.

Because evidently that basic idea of mounting the engine to the shell rather than to the crossmember hasn't reached the FWD crowd....And it still takes a fair amount of convincing to get the few RWD guys to see the advantages....

People don't see it on the Inter-net so the idea can't exist..

(By the way, have you noticed the frequency of people mucking with rally like the Project Binky guys or Andy Burton or the huge majority of Swedes and Finns who are farmers and who are a bit "older"?
And the overwhelming per-centage here who are some sort of keyboard jockeys?---urban and not really daily work on greasy broken machines types?)

I was looking at the trans mount and I think I see what VW was doing when they tied both mounts to the same point. If I pin the trans to the subframe at one point and to the chassis at another point, I'm actually introducing stress across the transaxle case that wasn't there before. The flex of the chassis and the flex of the subframe isn't the same. I guess I would see a torsion type stress across the transaxle case between the two mounting points. I could see where this would adversely affect reliability.

I think it would be better to mount everything to the chassis and nothing to the subframe. Let the subframe flex with the suspension independently of the engine/transaxle, and hold those as still as possible in between the frame rails. I also think the front crossmember should be reinforced/upgraded to reduce flex, and welded in to make it an integral part of the frame.

But what do I know... I'm new to this and new to VW mk2's, so maybe I'm completely wrong too.

As for the rest of it, I guess my question would be "how much fab time/experience do you have?" as well as "how hard to you drive the car?" If you have a lot of fab time and/or you're driving the car where you're constantly breaking shizzle, then by all means do the custom mounts. OTOH, if you're just getting going, then maybe just putting in a proper front mount and reinforcing the stock transmission arm will do, and you'll get out on the stages faster and get some seat time under your belt.

It's kind of a big grey area. I've both seen people who've rushed getting out there and have instantly broken down, and people who've spent five/seven/ten years building "the perfect rallycar" and never actually run.

My understanding was it was done for ease of assembly. The entire drivetrain can be assembled on the subframe, then bolted up to the chassis at the end.

Good for a factory, not so good for anything else.

If you look at the hood of a lot of G60 Corrados, you can see the dent from when the hydraulic type mount let go. Just a little VW trivia.

I'm a bit rough on the cars I race. I'm good with the work van and the daily driver but if it's a race, I'm throwing the car all over the place and things break when I do that.

I'm going to have to address all the mounts at some point but for now I'm just putting a rubber mount on the front because I'm running a rallyx in two weeks and there are more pressing issues like crappy wiring to the fuel pump and fan, and front struts that keep working loose that need my attention. I worry with this car that I'm doing too much prep but there really are THAT many things wrong with it. It's obvious now (6 months in) that it should have been a parts car.

My metal fab skills are not as good as most of you guys, but I can usually make what I need to get by. I've got a much better idea of what I want to do now and I'm sure it's within my capabilities.

Thanks to everyone for all the input and ideas. If I feel brave enough to put up with the laughter I'll post pics of what I make.

From the pics, the engine side bracket seems to be bolted directly to the block?
