Besides (obviously) how awesome this is, any specific reason for going with the diesel? Just wondering if there is an advantage I am missing smiling smiley

Just fun

You're a crazy man haha. I'm thinking about "starting" the process of building a new shell over the next 2-3 years and that is daunting enough as it is.

I can't wait to see this thing out on stage though! smiling smiley

Looks like it's going to be a hoot, and I can't help but love the wacky rally cars.

Skid plate finished. It has welded aluminum channel braces inside running front to back in addition to the frame up front.

Wiring harness nearly tamed (I think). De-pinned a bunch of unneeded stuff from the fuse box and reduced the harness a bit more. Still no smoke coming out of the wires so that is a good start!!

Still have to deal with the clutch and brake pedal switches. I am running a pressure switch for the brake lights so the pedal switch needs only fool the ECU into never seeing brakes applied so that brake and throttle can be applied simultaneously without fuel cut. Not sure what to do with the clutch pedal switches. Am I correct that they are only used to cancel cruise control?

As far as I know yes they should only be used to cancel cruise control. Deisel guru's on one of the 4x4 swap forums might be a little more sure than I am.

normally isn't there a switch/sensor on the clutch pedal so you don't try to start the car with out pressing down the pedal? or did that come about after the mk2 golfs?

He's got a good point. ^ Motor isn't from a MK2 alex, and the ecu is the concerning point.

Posted the following over on the TDI-Club forums with no responses

I am at the point in my project where I am wrapping everything up but still have these switches to deal with and could use some guidance. I have found the threads on defeating the left-foot-braking throttle cut and such but they don't answer all of my questions and I find wiring diagrams quite intimidating so hoping for some practical knowledge.

It seems that my wiring harness has 3 pedal-activated switches:
1) Brake pedal switch--activates brake lights, feeds ECU information that results in throttle cut when braking, feeds cruise control defeat signal.

I have wired a pressure-activated switch to control the brake lights on this car (rally car) so this switch does not need to function for that purpose but I do need to keep the ECU from thinking the brakes are applied and cutting throttle. I understand this can be completed through tuning. If this is the case, can I simply un-plug the switch and tie it up out of the way after getting a tune?

2) A Neutral safety switch on the clutch (the black switch???) to prevent starting car in-gear and lurching forward/backward into cars/people.

I currently have this switch simply dangling under the dash. Have not checked to see how the switch operates --- is it closed or open when depressed?---- but since it is not mounted, the car can be started with or without the clutch depressed. I am fine with this and it seems I could just un-plug the switch and jumper the terminals and tie the harness up out of the way

3) A second clutch pedal switch (Blue) for cruise control defeat ???

Not sure what to do here as I don't know what the switch does. If it is only used to defeat cruise control then no problem. If is is also used for something else, I may have to deal with it somehow.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated as always.

Thanks,
Josh

Have you talked with Steve Bis at Salta yet? He swapped an 02 TDI into a 92 4Runner, full harness and all. Fully legal and now titled as a diesel. He may know. Also daily drives a ALH TDI Golf now.
