The TDI is ALIVE !!!

The TDI is ALIVE!!!!!!

Still a bunch of work to go but it is technically drive-able, goes through all the gears, stops, starts, etc.

Thanks to Franz Diebold, Eric Langbein, US Rally Team, and New German Performance (NGP) for all the help over the past 6 years.

Even ran it through the gears (in the air)

See new brakes up front and the first pair of JVAB VW struts built (I think)

Heh. The Quantum is the same color.

Back to gapping rings and Plastigauging bearings. I think I'll stick with rotaries from here on out.

Nice Josh! So, now you should give us some more specs.
ALH?
Turbo?
Nozzle?
Weight?

Let's get some serious drool fest going here!

It's pretty sad how much I enjoy my 2003 TDI Golf.

ALH? --- Yup 245,000 miles but we refreshed the head
Turbo? --- VNT17/22 care of NGP Racing
Nozzle? --- Still stock nozzles, injectors, injection pump, and tune
We are shooting for a mild setup with about 165hp and 300tq in order to keep smoke and EGTs down.

Weight? --- Unknown.

Gas car is 2340lbs ready to rally with fuel. The TDI is probably 40lbs more than the 16v accounting for the turbo, plumbing and intercooler. Trans is about 20lbs heavier too.

BUT:
TDI has a lighter skid plate & frame
TDI has a 13lb lighter front subframe
TDI has a 10lb HEAVIER battery
TDi has a more extensive cage but more 'right-sized' tubing 1" x 0.065" wall components
TDI has kevlar and resin underbody protection which adds weight
TDI has full glass windows and rubbers all around
TDI has 15" wheels & tires

So, I bet it is 2500lb right now but have not weighed it.

Nice! Should be pretty attainable with that turbo, intercooler and exhaust, though maybe more nozzle needed.
Stoked to see some progress made on it!

Definitely will do nozzles with the tune.

The turbo is capable of about 200hp max but that seems silly and requires a cam and revving higher than 5000rpm....

165 is pretty conservative but I want to never look at the gauges even if running WOT 90% of the time for 10-15 minutes straight like we do on many stages.

And it'll be less likely to bend the rods. That becomes the next week point from what I've heard.

The worst thing (or best thing?) about turbo cars is you always want to do more. There are such gains that it makes it hard to leave them alone. NA cars once you do intake, nothing else really gains you much until you spend big. If I drive nice I can get 46 MPG on my TDI. I usually get 38 though cause I like acceleration.

Should be in the mid 50's mpg-wise on transits based on the results of other mk2 conversions.

Coming nicely. When's the debut?

FYI: Did you know you have a left hand disc on the right side?
