DMS 40mm Inserts
July 21, 2014 10:07PM
I've just got the Talons' DMS rears serviced (thanks Odi), I was informed by the previous owner that the front 40mm's were sent away to be fixed but the verdict was the inserts were toast and need new ones. The questions are: a, will it be worth the money to fix them, b, just use the hotbits on it at the moment or c, something else.....

Yes, it's a Ranger.
Xr4Ti, it is rwd and was made in Germany.

Toast is a pretty vague description.

They are in essence DMS outer tube and Bilstein guts...notice it says "do not open / nicht öffnet" on the seal holder? Aussie unfiltered may be rough to understand but I suspect that ain't some quaint dialect..

In any case if they're bent and the chrome is all ripped up with minor work which I can post a piccie of, you can go to Bilstein 40 inserts and those, if you go thru anybody who knows anything, can be valved nicely and work good..

Here's the only mod to do to use Bilsteins threaded rod to replace the unthreaded taper seat..

These were DMS 50s for a Celica All-trac delived withan astounding 160mm of travel which were re-worked to accept Bilstein 50s when i was first making those 6-7 years ago..
Same idea can be applied..

Alternately you could just order up some 50s for the front.

looks like the chrome is all pitted and the lack of resistence coupled with a nasty oil mixing with air sound point me in the direction of new inserts. in which ball park would the replacement inserts costs be?

About USD250 + some UPS inbound each

And they can be choice of travel, valving and how the tops are machined..IE you want big ol' fat pins to use with BIG 7/8" ID top mounts....You want to use OEM top mounts? wanna go to the nicer Offset Whiteline Subie top mounts?
Your choice...

I UPS'd the rears south for $43 took 5 days. Coming back used USPS $57 no problems. I'd probably try and catch a returning PNW crew after PFR to get them down then use a crew coming up for RMR as the delivery method.
