And to RallyRS; the first one or the second one?

I saw John post up recently that he was working on a new/different setup for the rear links and i believe it's different from what's been done before...

Well I have a brand new subframe in my basement... Gonna see about doing a long link setup in the rear. Maybe maybe not. But for sure the stock junk has to be reinforced or replaced with tubular.

Andrew K...

Is that top pic your car?
Looks like you are running stock contol blade and camber arms-with only the toe link and lower contol arms replaced with tubular-right?

At the least I'm doing tubular control arms. Billet camber arms (adjustable) and I'm unsure what to do with the trailing arm junk. Maybe I'll just go full tubular like johns previous setups. It's useless have beefy suspension if it's hooked up to sheet metal

Eventually yes. It seems like a great route for simplicity of design, weight, cleanliness and spares availability. Not to mention travel and strength.

Mike B

Yes that's my car. The setup as you listed is correct. Poly bushings in the s link. The other car runs an identical setup.

Riley

As you can see from the pics the stock trailing arms have been thoroughly reinforced.

Ahah yea zippies for reinforcement...you'd be surprised aha. Kidding too :-P. Yea sort of; notched, bent tube over the top and bottom with thick plate bent to contours and welded in as well as most holes/gaps welded in. And the strut is in double shear vs. Single.

Was gonna say the zipties are ingenius! That must hold up well. Do you have more of those trails laying around you wouldn't mind selling?

Andrew K.-just curious if you've ever cycled the rear suspension without the coilover installed and if there is binding?

If you research a little on the rear control blade when ford designed it with those thin stampings-they had reasons.

Besides being cheap-asses, and wanting good rear cargo space,Ford used those thin bendable stampings because they wanted passive rear steer, and they got it with the geometry and different lengths and angles of all the arms and the fact the trailing arm could bend somewhat.

Now I'm not saying we give a crap about having passive rear steer(especially on dirt),but I'm wondering how much(maybe trivial?) binding is going on with retaining the stock geometry and stiffening everything?

That's kinda why I always like the Burmeister set-up pictured above...

Oh and he hasn't posted for a while here, but I added a pic another Foci rally rear suspension style, as seen in this build thread(He's running Jvabs):

Sorry no I don't.

Mike.

Yea I cycled the rear susp with shock in place but no spring on it and nothing caused an issue. The rear end is so predictable now that nothing flexes wildly as before. I like the Burmeister setup for the same reasons.

As for that other setup, I've been following it but it looks extremely flawed to me. It lacks a trailing arm all together so I hope the rest of it was thought out. Namely I feel like he tried to reinvent the wheel when all we needed to do was find a better way to slice bread. I also dislike a front knuckle in the rear due to weight and complication with the tie rod ear not to mention an additional balljoint plus wheel bearing which I'm unsure as to how he secured due to there not being an axle going through it which requires about 200ft.-lebz to set the preload on it. Subaru has used a dual lat link and single trailing arm forever and it seems to work darn well. That's why it's such a joy to see it on an economy car such as the protege! It looks like he needs to invest in a tube bender as well.

Last I heard he was looking at NEFR but I don't know if that happened. Curious to see how it holds up and what kinda times he's doing, though with that engine it better be fast ones.

I agree I think it is one of the better FWD rear suspensions and should translate well onto the Focus chassis once you add the shock towers. Not a novice build but definitely a big step up from the OEM focus stuff.

Yeah Andrew K..First thing I thought when I saw those pics where"hmm no trailing arm-
Hope that doesn't fold back on him on a big impact".

Looks more like a road race setup to me.
I'm hoping we are wrong as he's got some serious fabbing time into that it looks like.
