Rally Car:
Started a Golf... Never Finished It

94 Golf Project, 90% Complete - 7,000
March 14, 2015 04:14PM
Time to let the build go. Started when I had more time than money, then life happened. After getting married, buying a house and having a kid. I now have more money than time… but rather than letting this sit for years, I would love to see someone else finish it and get it out to a rally.

The car is ~ 90% complete. Mockup was done and is need of final assembly and minor finishing.

Specs:
- 94 VW Golf 4 door. No Sunroof
- Roll Cage by Dave Clark
- NASA Log Book, inspected by Gene
- Fully seam welded. Front subframe mounts replaced with threaded steel inserts through the frame in double shear (you won’t rip those suckers out). All undercoating stripped
- ABF 2.0 16v European engine. I was told it only has 15k on it since a rebuild. I didn’t tear it down to confirm, but from looking at the valvetrain and cross hatch in the cylinder bores I believe it.
- 02A tranny rebuilt by Robert Gobright. 4.24 R&P with a spool. Converted to hydraulic clutch and cable shifter. Shift tower moved inside the vehicle to be closer to the wheel.
- Tranny mount welded to frame rail
- Burmeister Strut Mounts
- Plan was to go with Carbs. So twin side draft 47mm OER carbs (Japanese webber copies) with ITG filter.
- Electromotive XDI crank trigger ignition system. (No injection, so carbs only)
- All wiring is done (minus hookups at rally lights as they were never installed) and running 12v to the fuel pump from relay. Engine wiring harness was stripped of all extras and ECU. Factory harness now runs lights, starter. All additional electrical circuits run on a separate fuse block and relays mounted to passenger side dash.
- Full Autometer gauges.
- Brantz International 2 rally computer wired to VSS signal from Tranny
- Sabelt seats. Ferrari challenge for driver, Taurus for passenger
- Roof vent
- ATL fuel cell recessed into trunk floor.
- All fuel lines (braided) are run inside. Dual Carter fuel pumps routed in parallel
- 11” Corrado G60 front brakes (still 4 lug, requires 15” wheels)
- Hydraulic hand brake with proportioning valve. All brake hard lines run inside. New master cylinder.
- 2:1 steering quickener, Momo steering wheel with hub
- Fire suppression system (will need a re-charge)
- Battery mounted inside with 150 amp circuit breaker on ground.
- Have new clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, A-arms, Rear main seal and probably a lot more parts I forgot about
- Had the crazy idea to run independent suspension in the rear. Built mounts to use a front subframe in the rear. But due to an aftermarket component on 1 side, vs OEM on the other, the mounts were welded in 1/8” to the passenger side. I was going to move the mounts over, but you can always go back to stock as the OEM rear suspensions mounts are still there and the stock beam will be included.
- Also includes a spare stock 8v ABA and another 02A tranny. Both would require a rebuild.

Left to do:
- Install Engine/Tranny
- Underbody Protection (Engine skid plate, HDPE)
- Build Exhaust from cat to outside of car
- Missing body parts: Windshield and front bumper
- Fuel Cell cover (or whatever ridiculous box over a box over a box is required now)
- Build mount for rally lights (if you want them)
- Replace consumable (Brake rotors/pads, flexible brake lines, spark plugs, etc)
- Need rally suspension, belts, spill kit, emergency kit

$7,000. Really want to sell this as a package, but if I can’t find a buyer I will part it out. Tons of pictures available to send.

No offense, and nice engine, but you are askin a bit too much.

Not trying to pull one over on anyone or make back my money - a stack (I never let the wife see) has over 20k in receipts........... But if someone thinks its too high, shoot me a price.

here are some more pics from various stages over the years

I withdraw my prior statement. Nice build.

Looks great and a great deal too.

Anyone looking to buy ---- forget the silly independent suspension rear end. it is a terrible idea. Just run the beam.

Haha its true... ah well to be young and foolish.... stock beam included winking smiley But you will need to stiffen it up using the VW motorsports idea to triangulate the 'arms'

Hi Jason,

I was wondering what happened to you. Too bad you won't enjoy the fruits of your labour, but what you've done looks great! Thanks for the tips years ago when I was in shell-prep mode. Good luck with the sale.

I keep buying lottery tickets and hoping this car is still for sale.

It's on the other side of NA, but damn that is a nice looking build.

Price drop to $5,000 if someone gets it before Oct 1. If not, I'll start parting it out.
