Why must CL continue to tempt me with G5 cars...the right year for the local smog problem i.e. OBD1, already stripped so I don't have to feel bad about gutting it...

1995 BMW e36 M3 Race Car Project – rolling chassis

Great project for building a BMW race car

This is a 1995 BMW e36 M3. The motor and transmission have been removed from the car and are not included in the sale.

Most of the interior components have also been removed. All other components are still installed on the car (e.g., suspension, steering rack, brakes, body parts, etc.). Front bumper is missing; otherwise all other body parts are included. Body is very straight and there are no signs of any accidents. This would be a great project for anyone wanting to build a race car.

This item is for pick up only.

There's a 328 manual running here with high miles and a few issues for $3000.

Theres a running 94 325IS here for $1500.

Are are the little extras you get from an M3 worth paying for initially?

Or could you start with any e36 series car?

The Finns have a spec E36 series using the twin cam motor, which makes about 190 at the wheels.

The e36 M3 chassis has some minor extra reinforcements at the suspension points and the control arms are slightly different to accommodate the wider wheels. It's not worth paying the extra premium for those alone because all of those points are covered in normal chassis prep. I'm going to start with an M3 purely for local SMOG concerns.

The M3 puts out more emissions than any other 3 series, so it gives you more room to play with under the emission requirements ?

A stock M3 makes plenty of power and a '95 is OBD1 so I can remove more non-racecar stuff (while staying legal) than you can on the later years. I've refereed one engine swap in the past and my time is better spent in other places. It's just way easier to start with an M3 so it passes the visual and emissions test without any extra work.

And before anyone asks, I don't want to register my car out of state or any other silliness to skirt the SMOG laws.
