Now if someone would put a WRX engine back there ol' Jens would really tip over..

Sadly it is way more dependable with that 350 than anything Porsha ever made.

Actually Gene, Porsches are very dependable. Most successful endurance race car of all time.

Then again, it's hard to hurt a small block Chevy.

You mean like this?

He's also put a WRX motor in a 914.

I've heard rumors he's thinking about an LS-powered Boxster too.

This is the guy what will be doing the cage in my Gaylant.

When I first started flying I looked at all the kit planes using car motors and thought wow those are a lot less money then say my 470 Cubic Inch 0 470 that makes 230 HP at 2650 RPM that cost $32,000, hell my whole Subaru GT that makes 250 HP cost less then just the motor in my plane.

Then I looked at duty cycle, the average street car runs at something like 15% load over its life span vs an airplane motor that runs at an average load of 75% for 2000 hrs or about 250,000 miles. No street car motor gets even close to that kind of reliability.

When pulling over to add oil is NOT an option I will stick to airplane motors in airplanes.

In the long run reality always wins.

Having an A&P, and having a few aircraft engines apart, I would agree. The 402's I used to work on ran at 39" manifold pressure, and cruised at 32" or so, for 1600 hours between OH. I never saw an engine fail, and we operated 20 aircraft in and out of a dirt runway.

We had 2 206's, and 4 207's, as well as the 402's. The 206 with the TSIO 520 was an Awesome airplane. That thing cold get off the ground in a hurry....

speaking of bad ideas, I saw a homebuilt plane in a museum with a turbocharged mazda rotary motor (!)

Its way cooler the other way; I heard about a Corvair with a Continetal stuffed in the back.
