Konig 15" wheels for $55
July 22, 2010 08:24PM
Folks:

Just a reminder that with NASA membership (I think it is $50 - Anders can answer this), you can get any Konig 15" rim for $55 per, with the agreement that you will not resell.

We like these:

Retrack:

Rewind:

I'd suggest contacting Chris Cobetto with NASA Mid-Atlantic, as that was the site I was directed to by the Konig rep.

Chris' contact info is E-Mail: chris@nasaracing.net | Phone: 804.883-7669.

NASA Mid Atlantic is: http://www.nasaracing.net

Sounds like a good deal if the wheels can hold up!

Guys, this is a nice price and a nice deal but the question of durability has not been addressed.
If these are like every other German wheel I have EVER seen (except some 911 wheels) then they're very LIKELY only a bit harder than two day old dog sheeeeut.

Find out more about where made, what heat treat, and have they lasted in use.

$55 is a lot more than $15 and if they're no stronger then WTF?

Just cos it says Konig, don't make it german.

Konigs are cast wheels made in Taiwan by these guys http://www.yhihongkong.com/businesses/manufact.asp

Two ways:
Gravity Casting
This is the casting process whereby the molten material is poured into a mold and allowed to cool. These molds are usually made by machining a piece of material on CNC machine equipments to produce a wheel that only requires minor finishing (like drilling or possibly trimming of some excess metal) to be considered complete.

Negative Pressure Casting
The other system used is the low pressure or negative pressure casting. Here instead of pouring the molten material into the mould, the molten alloy is drawn up into the mould using a high-pressure vacuum.

The other is the MAT process:
http://konigusa.net/nodisplay/mat-technology-wheel-process/

Same process Enkie uses on the RPF1's.

The MAT process wheels claim to be the strongest cast wheels Konig sells.

I'm not saying they're bad wheels but I've seen a set of Konig wheels cracked through the rim from street driving.

How great can cheap cast wheels really be?
