So Jeep made a whole crap load of WJ Grand Cherokees and from 1999-2004 and lots of them came with "Quadra-Drive"
You might ask what that is this strange drive system? Good question. If you are a service manager at a Jeep dealer it's those damn aggressive hydraulic differentials that make all the soccer mom's angry when their tires scrub during parking lot maneuvers. For those wise and lucky souls who have chosen to rally a Volvo it represents a dirt cheap way to get a great (tunable) rear limited slip diff. I bought one last week to see if they were interchangeable. Stock on the right, Hydra-Lok on the left: that strange looking piece of sheetmetal is the pump inlet tube: behind are the inlet ports to the pump and the outlet check valve the guts of it a nice big clutch pack and most importantly the spring steel check valve that a savvy individual could easily modify to alter the pressure that the pump generates...hmmmm The only sticky point is that they offset the pinion gears to make room for the pump so stock axles won't work. That's all for now. I just wanted to get these up for reference. Tim |

For those that haven't caught on yet, this is what we invented RallyAnarchy for: diverse folks feeding good ideas to each other.
Who said it first? "after the productive forces have also increased with the all-around development of the individual, and all the springs of co-operative wealth flow more abundantly -- only then can the narrow horizon of bourgeois right be crossed in its entirety and society inscribe on its banners: From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs! or maybe earlier: And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. (Acts 2:44-45) ... Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, and laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. The Jeep guys hate them because they are speed sensitive not torque sensitive which makes them crap for rock crawling. There are a couple of companies advertising complete replacement detroit locker kits for those jeeps. Supposedly they go from totally open (you can spin the spider gears by hand) to "locked" with 1.5 revolutions. My current thoughts are to run it stock first to see how it works and then try a couple of different modifications individually. I'm thinking is that enlarging/radiusing the inlet ports should make it lock up faster. Making a stiffer outlet valve will increase the total pressure in the clutch pack for more lockup. Tim |

Dana quotes 1.5 rotations to full pressure and about 3/4 of a rotation before they start to build pressure. We won't know for sure until we play with it though. Tim |

Basically, they work just like viscous clutches, but instead of viscoelastic goo, they drive the inside of the gerotor pump off of one axle, the outside off of the other axle, and use the pressure that it generates to clamp the clutch pack. Uhm a quick note. The inventor of the Quadra Drive is a fellow Turkish Rallyist and he invented it as a rally application when we did not have the money to but fancy ass diffs. He now resides in Santa Barbara and is one stubborn dude who would not give up rallying his Starion. He recently purchased the whole Selcuk Karamanoglu setup and is nonchalantly freshing up both the Open and PGT cars. One day he will return to the rally scene.
Hell myself, his brother and a few fellow rallyists even got yelled at by him when we were making too much noise at their house whilst he was working on the drawing board. Good old days. He doesn't check Rally Anarchy and that other site, but I just talked to him, who knows he may stop by here. Nice back story Mustafa! I will run the hydro-diff stuff past the Jeep guys I know. They run XJ Cherokees off-road and Volvo 240s on stage so they have a vested interest. I will post when I have their feedback

My favorite Professor when i was at Evergreen, Richard Alexander told me one night when the graduate American Lit seminar I talked my way into was over early that he had once ridden the elevator up to the same floor in the NYC publishing house and same floor with a very old lady. No words were exchanged, just a quiet ride up. When the door slid open, the woman walked forward to the reception desk and said clearly "That man just raped me on the way up". She was answer "Yes ma'am we'll take care of it", and she walked off. My man walks up quite shaken, he was in his 20s then, late 1950s, and kinda stutters out "Who was that and and....." He was told "That was AynRand, don't worry she says that about everybody, everytime" Seems she was insane at that point. > > > > See me go at: > www.11tenths.com > In the long run Reality always wins.
