VW Motorsports Shifter

Hey JVL you ever build one of these?

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4618690-VWMS-Shifter-fabrication

Poked around on teh vortex and found some info in the attached pics, but little info on the dims for the pivots that need to attach to the gearbox end of things.

several people said they ordered the cable components from midwest controls.

Could just buy one of these, http://www.cae-racing.de/shifter_vw_golf1.htm#marke2
but that's just a crazy stupid amount of money for what it is.

And yeah i still need to send you my struts. car has been moved around constantly to get other equipment in and out of the shop i want to get it back inside before i make it unmovable again for a while.

Stupid work junk getting in the way of working on my rally junk.

There is more to this shifter if you want to use it on an 020. You would need a plate that bolts on to the trans to hold the cables. I would love to have one of these. I think that there is a market if the price is below $600.

I can absolutely make those at the $600 price point if you can find ~15-20 people who want one (sadly this is the part where it always falls apart). I've been kicking around doing something similar for my Toyota transmission. They're all basically the same geometry with slightly different motion ratios.

The main improvement is that it actually works.

So how do you make this work on an 020?

And does it work that much better than replacing the plastic linkage parts with heim joints?

From a DIY shifter thread on vortex... the necessary 020 bracketry.

I need verified dims for the pivots and also the cable lengths. I have enough info on the shifter itself to make detail drawings. The rest is still unverified. I don't have time to fsck around and prototype and remake stuff.

If I get proven dims for a 020, I swear I will draw this up and share the detail drawings and bill of materials with the whole damn world.

Cable lengths can be found in hear along with some nice pics of CAE's 020 conversion plate: http://www.usrallyteam.com/downloads/instructions/golf2_020_shifter_install.pdf

And to think the factory set up is an over engineered pile of linkage....This takes the cake!

What is the downside to heim joints that would justify the cost? I know that it should shift better, but it costs so much more (5x at least!) than buying the USRT kit.
You can make the USRT kit for ~$80 with all the nice aerospace sphericals and what not.

Going with an 02A or M or whatever probably makes more sense than converting an 020 - stronger box - more availability of parts. Best when attached to a 2.0 16v. I gave that combination away (out of a Passat) for free about 3-4 years ago to a guy from PA that was going to put in a rally car, but he never got that far along. A shame. I love that engine.

The advantages of the cable shift over the linkage are: much better shift quality, lasts longer, unlikely to go out of adjustment when the car is damaged.

The 02A/M is always the better choice of transmission partially because it already has the cable shift system. For people like me who don't want to buy another Kaaz for an 02A/M, converting to cable shift is a nice improvement.
