Here's one of the last things I have to fabricate for the rally car. I've got the back carbon fiber end piece attached to the aluminum bit now, and once that's all cured I'll be able to really figure out how I'm attaching the inlet from the airbox.

I've still gotta figure out how I'm going to actually attach the two halves together, I'm thinking those little flip clip things (like what on an airbox). I also need to get some thin weatherstripping or maybe foam rubber to make a seal.

Did you do any calculations to figure out what volume your plenum needed to be? It looks pretty big.
The runner length and plenum volume work together to generate a resonant frequency which can enhance airflow. So, you typically design the runner length, runner diameter, and plenum volume to tune for a specific engine speed to enhance torque. Since your runner length and diameter are already fixed by using an off the shelf part, you should make sure the plenum volume is in the correct range to enhance these already fixed variables. Yeah, I did. I have a page somewhere bookmarked breaking down the equations, which they got out of a motorcycle tuning book. I've also got another pdf somewhere that is a college dissertation on WRC airboxes (what are the odds, right?) for the Celica, it's like 100+ pages of info. That airbox is actually slightly smaller than I would have liked, due to size constraints :/ oh well. Maybe version 2.0 will be bigger
EDIT: SKimmed that ppp. Interesting read. I'll have to compare it more to the two sources I used to see where they all differ, and what's the same when I have more time. Maybe I'm right on the money? ---------------------------------------------- The rules here are just for shits and giggles. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/09/2012 09:07AM by Dazed_Driver. |

When I built the cold air box for my friend's EG33-powered Impreza, I used stock WRX air box clips...he had them around and they were free. Kids toss the stock airboxes all the time. ![]() Opel is a 4-letter word... http://www.flickr.com/photos/10498579@N07/sets/ |

I did. It was easier to go to world market and find a bowl of roughly the right size (diameter, nailed it, unfortunately, the inside of the bowl wasn't a perfect sphere like the outside (save of course for the little "foot" was) to use as a mold for the end pieces, vs make a full mold.
Plus, I knew how the back end would be, but the front, due to the inlet, I'm not yet entirely sure where things are going yet. ---------------------------------------------- The rules here are just for shits and giggles. |

Dad dug out an airbox from a suby or mitsubishi last time he was at the pull a part, it fits so well behind the right headlight, you'd think it was stock! That's what'll hold the filter, and then I'll have a little elbow connecting the two. I'll take some pictures. The guy I was supposed to be teaching right now rescheduled, so I have time!

No, not really. I can run leads for my buddy if I want to, but I quit the corporate retardation awhile ago. My main sources of income now-a-days are Timm Von Derau - the photographer, and Seattle Photography Lessons.

Curious...other than pick at your car building (or lack of ) we haven't talked in a long time.

Ah, yeah. Been busy with lots of stuff (namely planning and starting two businesses and finishing up classes).
I'll actually be calling you soon, I have some questions about my car, so, be ready! haha But yeah, I quite GutterMaxx in July I think it was, as corporate has their head up there ass. I had a 29.5 percent closing average, most deals on the board, and they were mad because I didn't have enough cancellations. I had one. Note the "NOT ENOUGH" part. WTF? They want me to push harder? No thanks, happily in the front of the pack, not about to turn into uber douche salesman. I'll stick with helping people solve their problems in the most cost effective way, not trying to sell them shit they dont need. ---------------------------------------------- The rules here are just for shits and giggles. |

It's pretty amazing how much mid-guided pressure is in the sales world. Anything from the poor clerk at Target being forced to pedal corporate credit cards , the clerk at Sears selling extended warranties on hose clamps, the bank teller who is required to look at your personal acct screen and upsell products , all while trying to do their actual job in an accurate and timely fashion. Yup, much corporate thinking sucks big time.

Yeah, it was stupid.
Updates!
So the filter lives in that round box, and while there is a hole in the center of the lid, I'm thinking about moving the elbow to the edge of the lid so the bend isn't sooo ridiculous. It's really tight and I'm trying to not have to get a new airbox. I'll get more pics up one I feel motivated to actually manually upload things vs using facebook. My phone decided it no longer wanted to take pictures today... So I can't just quickly upload them, haha. Steve, I checked out that part number, those look perfect for both the fuel cell and this! Thanks! ---------------------------------------------- The rules here are just for shits and giggles. |

Very shortly I will be building an air box for twin Weber DCOE's for a buddy of mine. I decided that due to underhood space restrictions I am just going to use a foam panel filter in lieu of a remote filter. Essentially half the airbox will be an air filter.
I got me some medium and fine Uni flat foam filtration material, and some stainless mesh to help hold its' shape. About $40 worth of material, and lots of surface area. Opel is a 4-letter word... http://www.flickr.com/photos/10498579@N07/sets/ |

You wouldn't happen to be able to dig up that college dissertation on WRC airboxes would you? I would love to take a look at it.
My life as an engineering student, stated by my friend Joe: "We were brainwashed in elementary school to think that making assumptions makes an ass of you and me, and that's crap. As engineers, we make assumptions, check them, and if we're right then we're geniuses" "The more I learn, the more I realize I don't know and have so much more to learn." - Claude Rouelle, Optimum G lecture June, 2011 |
