Looking at my spreadsheet, I ordered my press in m14 studs and lug nuts from this place.

Bimmerworld also has thread-in wheel studs "Made by one of America's leading manufacturers of race fasteners" (Guessing MSI?) from $5-$15. Each.

Far as I can figg'ah they're abooot $9.98/stud and 3.98 /nut EACH

Bugpack--used since 1987 with zero failures---$10/5 pack.

Those look nice....

But for that price i want to have steel inserts in the wheels, cylindrical drive sleeves around the base of studs.

And a reach-around.

What advantage? What disadvantage? Never had one fail in 15 years on 6 different cars and I have ripped struts and control arms and tie rods, and stub axles off but never a stud. Easier to re-use too compared to pressed in (and sometimes zapped too).

Why? Easy. Cheap. Easy. Reliable. Easy. More reusable. Easy. No welding. Easy. No press needed. Easy. Can carry spare in car and install on side of road. Easy.

Did I mention how much easier thread in studs are than press in studs? No drill, no press, no cracks, no welding, no disassembly of hubs, bearings, etc.

I've watched the fiasco of loading a car up after screw in studs that went in easy came out easy.. 1 DNF....certain horrifying death averted by 1/2"


I'll stick with "fairly easy"----and dead certain.

Well, they are sort of expensive. More expensive than ARP. I think they retail for $7-9 per stud. Of course I don't think anyone pays retail.

But if you want to economize, I use these that we have made and sell for $3 each.

I use the same studs Josh does and have never had them break. Locktite red on the inner thread. Since I always carry spare hubs with studs in them already it may be kind of silly not to use the press-in style, but since the screw-in ones work and they're easy I've just kept using them.

They really only are for cars that originally had lug bolts. I certainly wouldn't convert a press-in to a screw-in.

I do not agree with everything John has to say - BUT if it is a "Technical Question", I am 95%+ certain that John has the right of it.

I cannot think of but one time when I did not land on "John's side" of the Technical Part of any of the debates I have witnessed here in the last couple of years. (since even before I quit lurking)

It would depend on the pressure and volume of the tire grinning smiley

I'm trying to work up a line of logic that would make it seem that it would be most beneficial to run with the tires flat. Less unsprung, rotating mass you know.

At any rate, we've got another indicator of the difference between someone who actually has to work on things, and who just drives them (in real life or in Gran Turismo, whichever). Bullet nosed studs are the only way to go. GM puts them on damned near everything, M12 and M14, and I have a large collection of salvaged studs from failed hub assemblies. (Free is even cheaper than $1.39 a pop)

Hell, I bullet nose the input shaft on every transmission I acquire, just to make installation a throw-it-in affair instead of wasting minutes trying to get it lined up just right.
