Nice story Anders. Closest I've come to riding a motorcycle is jumping a moped over a hump-backed canal bridge where I grew up in England.

Hmm I just took the MSF class and got my endorsement - I rode on the street for the first time a few days a go on a Motoard bike during a test ride.

A minor blow to my confidance when the bike ran out of gas. It only took me a few moments to figure it out.

In the long run reality always wins.

The first and only time I rode a dirt bike was out at CORE. It's about a half mile from the track to the porta potty and so I hopped on a friends Honda 250 and was like, "I ride a scooter and I've rode plenty of four wheels so I'll be fine." I was, but the weight difference and higher center of gravity really threw me off. And having to poo the whole ride there kind of sucked. Anyhow, I'll buy a little motocross bike to go trail riding one of these days. Though the KTM 450 Supermoto bike from 2 or 3 model years back is absolutely awesome. Acceleration like a Group B car for $5000.

You can get that from any post 1979 500 class bike.
For sure by mid 80s.

Pay a lot less than 5g.

I'm half-heartedly trying to sell my Husky SMR 450 supermoto bike, so if you're susceptible to temptation... Bike comes with two sets of wheels and brakes, one slicks with big brakes, one knobbies with small brakes. I'd probably take $5K. Gotta try and remember what I paid for it two years ago when I bought it (that was, what 3 rides ago?)

Its WAY too much bike for you (nothing personal, its way too much bike for me too), but that doesn't stop most people....

Can you imagine the newer 950 one. That thing is ridiculous. I'm still throwing money at rally cars. I'm sure one of these days I'll get tired of it and buy a dirt bike.

Michel, if you could find me a bike in Reno next month... I'd be happy to drive it around the pit.

Actually, I hadn't thought of this before, but with bikes, if one is only looking to have a good time (read "not a serious 'win' attempt", an arrive and ride scenario could work. You find a legal dual-sport bike, I rent it for a hundred bucks, fly in with my my helmet, boots, and roll-chart reader in a duffel bag, run the rally, and fly out. One could get to go to lots of rallies that way. Hmmmm. Maybe in a couple years I'll do that. Oooo! Ooooo! Another idea! Spec class! Stock bikes. Something around 650 size. That way you really could fly in and have a great race.

Oh, Michel, dude, you need to head over to ADVrider.com and start some promotion work with those guys. There's already a couple threads (I think one in "racing" the other in "regional->west"?) but they really need the organizer to jump in, post a couple road pictures, answer questions, and get the word out about the rally.

Aw, c'mon. Just come out and have fun. I think I have a 125 lined up for you. Read the roads - we'll have plenty of signage up. Who cares what your speed is? After you've done a couple of events we'll hassle you mercilessly for being slow, but for now, just come out and screw around! Think of all the good experience you'll get for Sandblast next year!

I'd never heard of ADVrider.com until this post, but it seems to be pretty popular. I'll check it out more thoroughly when I have a chance.

So, John...since the "get John & the Saab out to OTR" initiative seems to've failed, what about coming down and running a bike at North Nevada? How's your shoulder?
