I have been reading the how to prep an escort book and they make mention of strengthening the stock axle by adding some sorta bar... hears a
http://www.doublegmotorsport.com/rsprep/06-Rear%20Axle.pdf The blurb about strengthening the stock axle should be on the first page. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/13/2013 08:36PM by Eric Ewert. |
It all depends on the live axle and the particulars of the design on if any strengthening like that is needed. It normally is not needed on most such axles....especially if you are not running the East African Safari. Some of the SW US rallies seem to have the roughest roads annd it does not look like you will be running those. Are you doing a 79 Corolla like your moniker?

Somebody wasn't thinking very hard with the bar idea... Bar ___________________V Force...How much bend resistance you think a long bar stick out has> A) more than a wet noodle ![]() C) like my rock hard cawk Look at 6.6 How hard is it to bend a flat piece of aluminum on edge. Strength is function of Hgt of the material, from roughly 100 to 260mm If you---or the OP can do a version of this, it is infinitely stronger: ![]() John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! What are you talking about, the diff or the whole axle? Adam Crane has a volvo axle is his corolla. I have one in my volvo. both with welded diffs. They are a good deal as they are plentiful and very cheap, and can be geared to just about any ration for $130 from Yukon gear.com. Rear axles are almost a wear item. They take a ton of abuse. I killed one by hitting a big rock, turning it into a banana. Adam has broken an axle housing and on another occasion had a ring and pinion fail. So it seems to me to be an item that should be readily available, I have a spare in my long term parts pile. If you want to be totally hardcore, get a toyota truck axle, then you can have a real LSD diff. |

All depends on what engine you use and what sorta POWERZ it makes... A big margin of saftey--or reliablity is a good thing.. The small Toyota axles even in the AE86 are tiny little things intended for seeing 1600cc or limp, flaccid power sent thru on the way to pick up 32 sacks of groceries... Stress comes from what? Power sent into the diff weight of vehicle impact Are you going to leave the limp flaccid 1600 in and only drive to pick up a bag or 2 of groceries? If I do break an axle then I'd like to know I could find another , the corolla is pretty narrow and finding something to fit would be hard, so If I just beef up the one I've got and the punkin goes, I could always find another one of those but the axle would be hard to find.

Missed section 6.6 ill be honest ive only skimmed this chapter. That photo you posted looks way better, the piece of bar in page 1 would help a bit with up and down forces but the force thats trying to push the diff backwards id agree, it be similar to having a pencil in there. The diff brace you just threw up here however... i may have to attempt something like that. |

ya know in a short little thang like a No-rolla a little wider track wouldn't hurt, Do a tape measure check of the width, and post it.. Talk if fine. Numbers is better-er-er. Out here still pently boo koo old pickups with the 7.5 axle. They were narrower than the 8" stuff i like for the Volvos. 48 inches to the backing plates, i also have a 4wd 93 pickup and its 54 to the backing plates, is that to big of a difference, the rear drums on the trucks are gianormus id have to find bigger brakes for the front, a 70's early 80's celica would fix that , also the hubs would be larger..
