And 3 is "Because I WANT TO"---ie some irrational whim... Of course some people do not care at all if all they do is putter down the road going only 40% the speed of the best cause they get a Gold Star for just "participating" so they might want to do a Priapus, or a Sieata bone stock...Oh well, a lotta money spent for nothing.. My favorite reasoning is "because I know the car and have worked on them forever." Especially when it's said by a 20 something that's been playing with cars for a year or two. All cars are junk, they are just different kinds of junk. Most aren't all that different from any other.

In the name of reality, pretty sure there isn't a single rally focus in the US (or the world) with 300-400hp. Even 200hp on a fwd rally car is a handful, as in requiring serious talent and EXPERIENCE just to keep on the road at over 1/4 throttle. In the real world, Group 2 is full of very tallented drivers at the winning end of the field with closer to 150hp. We all want you to succeed and get into rally, Here is a recipe to get going; Keep it all as stock as you can, if you are a WRC-destined natural rally talent, you will have no problem winning 2wd with a relatively stock car. All you really need is some sort of rally specific suspension. You need this so you don't lose control and get bounced off the road on your first stage that and a low final drive gear ratio, like 4.8 to 1 or 5.2 to 1, and a limited slip diff. Find out now if these are available for the car you plan to build. Propper gearing will make you way faster than an extra bunch of hp. Start off with a super simple set-up and get seat time. I hate to say it but everything will be 2 to 10 times more expensive than you expect. If you are serious about being a race driver, get into a TAG cart. |

The thing I have learned over time is that hp costs money. Not the INITIAL money, the maintenance and sustaining it. Grant Hughes |

What's tag cart? Like I said I'm still learning about rallying and the car so bare with me folks lol. I sent this eibach suspension back so I can grab hot bits double adj. rally suspension. Then I just gotta find a mtx-75 and grab a TorsenLSD

Not aimed at you at all! I think you are on the right path, just a more general comment I've heard over the years. Usually it's a Gen 2 Eclipse or Isuzu Impulse or some other piece of junk that is poorly suited for rallying. I think a Focus is an okay choice if you are into that sort of thing. I think it'd make a better daily driver but they are fine rally choice. Loads of them and dirt cheap and nothing that's a total downer. Grant Hughes |

And avoid the Torsen,. on gravel or snow or even wet asphalt they will still allow one-wheel-peel. Clutch plate diff for rally. T-2 was the Torsen Diff that Ford sold for the MTX-75. It was a good deal at the time being something like $300. While not as good at the clutch dif it was like $800 cheaper and was an upgrade from the open dif that I was running before.
The only Dif that I know of made for the the 6 speed SVT trans was a Quaife. |
