Marc is my team manager - very passionate and very opinionated (Im so glad he is computer illiterate) and can be a pain in the ass when he wants to, but hey, cant we all. But he gets to deal with all the shit while I get to play Mr Nice Guy... Lets just say I think he has a good grip of TP's Huggies... and nothing..... Combining the two is how I learnt to drive !!!! Hey andy so ya started off like most guys who have actually done sumpin in the sport IN A RWD car!!!!
Was the 510 you had the real 510, ya know 68-73 IRS ones? Did you have a L-series lump in it, or did you upgrade to something more fun like a FJ20?? Anyways as one of the Founding memebers or Rally Anarchy (it was invented just in the driveway one evening while we were all bitching about the heavy handed "moderating" on the appropriately named "SS.com", and the "moderator extrodinaire" who sits in some fuckin blue Sub-a-rat and we were all dersiring someplace where we could write about junk-n-stuff just like we all speak), I really would like to welcome you aboard here. But come on, what's this about the fawkin snowmobile. You can tell us, we won't tell anybody else. Honest 8). And what's with the "South Sweden" location? Coz i remember hearing about bluebirds as being hot cars but not any such thing as a 510 until i came to the US. In fact, one of my fathers friends was always restoring/building and then selling them somewhere in Auburn rally gods would turn in their graves if they ever knew Lada's were now part of EU rallying!!! |

I dunno about that now..... I think I may be the last of that generation, I just got the RWD experience in just before i was coaxed (by people who knew more than me) into a frontwheel drive 1300cc shitbox.. yep, the real deal, a 1968, I Put in an L20B short block that I rebuilt with a friend and strapped a L18 head onto it - perfect compression for aussie pump gas. This only came about because after finishing the L20 rebuild I dropped the L20 head while walking from the shed to the car, it broke the front cam bearing casting off... what a wanker ! but it turned out for the best and I still have all my toes ! Found a datsun 240k being parted out and got the 5 speed tranny and front struts/hubs/brakes off it for fuck all - shit, I was so happy that day driving home in my moms car, covered in crap after stripping that stuff out of some shopping car someone was parting out in their front yard.... Mom was not so happy.... twin 45 DCOE's, shortened driveshaft, low diff ratio (4.1 I think) some decent shocks. fibreglass panels, ground down the front calipers so I could still get my 13" wheels on..... Aluminium 6 point cage, 3 point harnesses. Every cop in town chased me... Every other kid in town raced me (90% had rotaries) and every week I broke something on the bitch ! Tailshaft bolts axels all of the flywheel bolts (compression lock ups) even ran over the alternator with the back wheels after it snapped its mountings once. and when I didnt break somethin it would just stop... and I'd walk, and hitch.. and when I got back to it with a buddy's car and a tow rope it would start again.. like I said it was a Bitch - attitude problem I always said ! But the moral of the story is, I never got to compete in it on a proper stage rally..... why.. Cause I did not know shit about rallying at the time and set about building this car before studying rules (pre-internet) and asking questions, by the time I had finished it and spent the small amount of cash I had on it the rules had changed and it was so far from legal to compete in a rally, well, I had to start again.... Today I'd buy that car back in an instant... for anyone who wants to get into this shit... Number one thing to do if you wanna start rallying - Swallow your fuckin pride and ask people who know ! okay, old school justification rant over.... yep in south sweden... Arild, near Hoganas, near Helsingborg.... Herring HQ. Snowmobiler dude..... fuck why did I mention that..... Its such an old story, I could have killed christian that day, he scared the shit out of me... and to this day that's what pisses me off about the whole thing. he lent in my window after red flagging me and implied that they had hit a snowmobile. all I could see was travis at his car off the side of the road with a crowd of people.. I was imagining the worst, when I got out the car and saw they had a FLAT TIRE and no damage, no damaged snowmobilies, and a buch of Snowmobilers saying "what happened, why did travis stop" once I made eye contact with travis, I knew it was all bullshit.... turned out they had not even come close to a snowmobiler.. just really good opportunity to cancel a stage because they had a puncture and had been off. I do believe travis did not make the call - the body language between him and christian for the rest of the rally made that fairly obvious ! yes you can see one in the video, but they have tracks that are back from the roadside up there and you see them all the time.. anyway, so I meet the dude at SEMA - very funny guy - lets just say he confirmed my suspicions of what really happened and more than I ever expected.... I wont say any more than that. |

A Canadian official said a few weeks later at Perce Neige: "In Canada, the Red Cross is for medical emergencies only. You can deal with issues like snowmobiles near the road with the pedal in the middle."
