Who makes up this shit?

Just looked at Rally America's first "National" of the season.
Entry: Championship & Regional Rallies

Entry prior to 15 Jan 08:
$1650
$14.07 per scheduled stage mile.

16 Jan and later:

$2,681
Two Thousand Six Hundred Eighty-one dollars

117.2 scheduled stage miles if Christain Edstrom doesn't decide to cheat yet again and display Red Cross whenever things aren't going his way.

$22.875 per mile--again assuming no shenanigans from the anointed.

Somewhere between $75,000 and $130,000 in income from 49 entries to date.

Wonder what the split is?

What is the limit of greed and cynicism ?

You're joking, right? Or is RA joking? How on earth did they get 49 entries?

I broke it down in a thread on ss. heres what I said:

Last year there was a total of 51 entries, 31 national, 16 regional, 4 dual entry. Which would result in about $53,714 from entry fees (using this years early entry pricing of $1134 for a national entry, $825 for 2 days of regional, and $1340 for dual entry)

This year (so far) there are 48 entrants. 33 nationals, 12 regionals, 3 dual entries. Which is about $51,342. Not too far from my estimate on last year's entry fee money even though there are less regional entries and far less 2wd.

I could probably think of a dozen regional guys that arnt entered for whatever reason.

How many national competitors aren't using notes? Probably all are, right? So add $165 to that, don't forget, it seems to be some policy of RA events to never mention in their supps whether notes are available or not, how much they cost, and where to purchase them.

So, $1815.

2007 Event supp regs that didn't even have the word "notes" in them:
100 Acre Wood
LSPR
SnoDrift
Colorado

2007 events that did have the word "notes", but nary a mention of price or purchase method:
MFR
Ojibwe
STPR

2007 events that had "notes", told you you could get them from RA, but didn't mention price:
Olympus

2007 events that actually told you how much notes cost:
Oregon Trails

I wonder if OT will get in trouble... winking smiley

Anders

ps: just had a thought: if a bunch of people are complaining that the cost of H&N equipment is so much that it would send them to multiple rallies, just make sure the entry fee is way higher than H&N equipment, that will fix the problem! winking smiley

Grassroots rally. It's what I think about.

Oh, and while it looks at regional competitor entry, not national, here's some additional data on the topic:

Unbelievable. I urge everyone within distance to come and run one of the Canadian regional or National Championships. Great events, WAY cheaper and organizers are always trying to gain access to more roads, more miles, more fun.

I can add a little insight for our specific area...RAs costs and NRS costs are very similar for both regional and National events. Our biggest expense is road use fees and repair. Other costs range from T-shirts for workers, awards and banquet afterwards, equipment fees, acommodations for key personel, route book fees, medical personel. You would be seriously surprised at how quick the bank accounts get depleted.

The individual organizers set the price based on estimated costs and estimated entries. Even with paying road fees it's near impossible to find roads. It is just easier for resource managers to say "no" than to take a chance on damage, lawsuit or bad feedback from the "eco-Nazis"

For many years now it's been touch and go at the year-end banquet to get that paid for, and one NW organizer has dug several thousand out of his pocket to subsidize this.

Yes costs are high, but comparing fees between events without knowing the actual costs is similar to comparing the cost of a Hyundai Accent to a Honda Civic. Is Honda making a ton more or does the car just cost more to make ?

Problem with rally is the lack of income from a "gate" or admission, and not owning a local "track". If we could pool our resources and buy a 100 acres up near Tonasket where land is cheap we could really help our cause. Of course then we'd have the cost of the mortgage...so still no free ride.

I dom't think that NASA has any east coast events that even approach the price structure quoted for SnoDrift. West Coast may be different.

Sandblast charges a spectator fee and makes real money without having a gate.

Except, more and more events are disappearing. As far as I know, GCFR may not be running this year due to a lack of organizer.

Tell Subaru to pay for all this stuff. If they won't, then tell them
to set up their own venues, get and pay for their own workers, and
to bend over and kiss their own asses.

Kurt Spitzner sold SCCA U.S. rally to the manufacturers for next to
nothing back in 1999, and Rally America continues this
trend to this day.

Unbelievable!

That is insane. OMG.

In 2007, I'm pulling up supp regs for Prescott showing 100 stage miles for $600 (two day entry). God Bless the Prescott Rally team.

CHCA hill climb - $175 entry for 12-25 miles total over two days.
~$90 back if you start on day two. Additional $250-350 for 1st place, 150-250 for 2nd, and 50-150 for 3rd place.
Not to mention the fun atmoshpere, camping available at service aka the pits, BBQing, two events in a gambling city so lots of fun for adults, and the big Saturday night parties!

In the spring of 1999 Kurt Spitzner told me via telephone
that his plan was to raise the "ProRally" licensing fees
into multiple thousands of dollars so he could weed out
the non-factory and non-wealthy teams.

I'm not making this up. That is exactly what he told me.

His plan didn't happen with licensing plans, but it appears
Rally America entry fees could accomplish the same goal
with a little time (and a whole bunch of excuses).

If the oil companies raised the price of gasoline from
$1.20/gal to $3.20/gal in one year, what would happen?
If they raised gasoline prices the same amount over a
few years, what has happened? Nothing. Same thing with
rally.

Here is the complete fee schedule for SnoDrift:

So you could get there for 1100* which is reasonable. So the question is, why the big mark up for later entries? If you want people to sign up early, this seems like the way to do it.

*By reasonable I mean this much isn't uncommon...

Whatever it is its 10 to 20 times what entries cost just a few years ago for this sort of milage
