It means that most can't afford a WRC effort, but there are lots of older cars out there with the proper equipment ready to go racing.

It looks to me like participating in a rally is plenty popular but the popularity of participating in a WRC event/class is a bit low. I would speculate that the costs of participating as a WRC competitor do not balance with the benefits received.

I believe we are starting to see a similar trend with National verses regional entries here in the US. Not enough data yet for 2008.

Can you imagine the line at registration and tech? Holy crap. Let alone where do you fit all the cars for the start? and then you have all the stages open for almost 6 hours? Wow. Wow. Wow.

Anders, was at a end of season event in Karlstad Sweden once, it was "Tjej RM" or "Chick Realm Championship) (Riks= reich= realm) and the organiser was say "It's really disappointing that you go to all this effort at setting up this event, do all this stuff to make it happen, and ONLY 220 guys bother to show up."

Cars were finishing the whole event before dozens had even started.

Talked with a Russian from StPetersburg who was saying back in Soviet times THURSDAY EVENING SUMMER EVENTS would get like 350 entries "Yeah of course 90% are Ladas, but many many guys would have found the axle from this and a manifold from Italy for twin carbs, everybody would be what theyt could!!! Lots of fun!!!"

so does that mean that one crew could finish the event in a car and then a second crew could start the event in the same car. Now that would help cut costs and boost entries.

Well, to me it looks like the WRC entrance level is the same as all other "professional" sports levels. Its who has talant, or money that gets in. USually its talant, and full sponsorship rides. But, hell, even in Formula 1 where you almost HAVE to have a factory backing you (for all the research) If you've got the millions to build the car, and pay the entrance fees, you can go run F1.

And for the historic, it looks like there is a lot of support. I dont see the problem.

You are under a severe misapprehension Tim, only a tiny handful of the top 20 recieve a salary.
What you do to pay the rent or mortgage is your "Profession"; what you pay to do is a HOBBY, that means under 5% of the entrants in a low subscribed event could be considered by any normal use of the word "professional" to be professionals.

Its who has talant, or money that gets in.

Yep except its "talent".

No, usually it's money and paid for rides, even in the top 15 in WRC

F1 has always been full of "bought rides"

Feisty Peacock?

Actually, no.
Unlike US rally where you only need a short session telling you where the red cross sign is and how to show it, there is a long process to get a "Super License"
This isn't saying that some people who don't deserve them get one, but you can't walk in off the street and buy it without years of lower racing experience.
See: Kimi and the problems he had getting his ticket so soon
