Looks like we had about 18 2wd cars, wow! Some did get punished on Sand Trap Reverse, we had a bunch stuck there. Let's hear that story!

Cheers, and thanks for coming,
Anders

Okay. The 1st car to get stuck was Bob Cutler/Jimmy Brandt in the Porsche. They made it about 1/3 of the way up Hamburger Hill (as we're now calling it). Greg Healey and I were next in the 280Z. We went to the right around Bob and got sucked into the ruts, burying ourselves about another 1/3 of the way up. At this point, after attempting to free both of our cars to no avail, we all decided to try and help everyone else get through. Greg and I even pushed Robert Mauz/Mark Sackett up the hill a good ways to keep them going. A couple of minutes later, Andrew Frick's Focus got stuck just past the Porsche and that was it. Nobody else was able to get by until sweep could extract us all. The Wimpeys got us out (among others) and we continued on with our rally. In talking to Per Schroeder from Grassroots, he said that he and Jason had to be pulled out by one sweep truck pulling another sweep truck, pulling their Saab. It was DEEP out there!

All that being said, this was a really fun rally. The stages were great, the atmosphere relaxed, the weather perfect and everyone, whether on 2 wheels or 4, competing, crewing, working or watching had a great time.

After driving it today I'm pretty sure the exact spot, but if you give me the mileage I'll try to put "Hamburger Hill" into the road book. smiling smiley

Same here. The parking lot was full when we arrived and we had to wait our turn for a space. By the time we went up the hill the truck was bogging down with the wheels spinning on the rally car.

Still great event and good to put some names and faces together.

Anders, any chance of getting that hill sponsored so that some money could be spent improving the surface so that it won't rut up? A few trucks of gravel would help.

I believe it was around 1.5 miles in, but I'll have to check with Greg. :-)

We didn't have any real problems on that stage 4, but we think we know where it happened, there was one hill near the start where we got bogged down pretty good and had to really churn some sand to pull through! The event can be frustrating at times because looking at the landscape and terrain from the drivers seats, your head tells you you should really be able to haul ass! But sometimes the sand just sucks an ungodly amount of power and speed. My co-driver kept telling me to go faster! I was trying! Even on the one "straight as an arrow" section on the stage in the afternoon we struggled to reach 100 mph even with the pedal on the floor for what seemed like minutes!
Overall awesome event! We really had a great time and put in a strong finish to boot smiling smiley
Special thanks to the team with the 2wd lancer and the ford escort guys that lent us the angle grinder/welder respectively at the last service to get our broken panhard rod mount fixed and Josh/Jeremy Wimpey for giving us some driving advice that really paid off.

You guys had one hell of a drive Luke. Even w/o stage 4, you easily had the rest of us covered. Great job!

What a fun rally it was.

Burak and I knew a lot of people were going to get stuck at HamburgerHill, we were lucky to make it through without much trouble but it felt like we were going to get stuck for a second too. That straight as an arrow section Luke is talking about was seriously torturing.

I still wanna know how Brad Morris lost his whole rear window without any broken glass in the car.

It was a great rally, great people, great competition. We worked our asses off trying to catch Luke but the time difference was steady between our cars from start to finish.

Thanks for the plug but we can't be held responsible for dispensing any real advice :-)

The paraphrased conversation (nearly identical as conversation with the Wrights and others)
Them: Any advice on how to go fast in fwd in the sand?
Us: Never let off the gas even when it looks like you should
Them: Seriously...
Us: Yes, the sand slows you down so quickly that you shouldn't bother using the brakes either. Just keep your foot hard on the gas.
Them: Stay in the ruts or out of the ruts?
Us: In the ruts is faster and you are just along for the ride in the turns. You will feel the rear end "climb" out of the ruts in turns and it is un-nerving--letting off the gas makes it worse. Keep you foot in it.
Them: (skeptically) OK, so never lift?
Us: Yup! Keep on the gas unless your car is overheating...

Nice drive Luke.

Yea, no shit. I wish I had the time to install mine (along with a better engine/tranny) before that event. But hey, that's why they call them baselines.
