Paul, the 1,9 if you are talking about the 1.9 16 valve could be a very interesting motor for Wilson to corn-cider.
For normal aspirated motors of a given size the only way to increase the corrected compression ratio, and to do that we want something with a nice compact central combustion chamber and its even nicer if the sparkie plug is right there in the middle.
We could increase engine VOLUME but that means more weight, more weight forward means crappy weight bias, so IF we can up the comp that's a good way and the 1900 16v has a nice compact combustion chamber, and its a fairly small motor.

MANY larger Beeemers seem to have sorta large, open chambers which makes upping compression ratio more of a pain, particularly if you intend to use pump gas.

A hottish 1900 bored a bit with say 11.5:1 sounds like it could be a fun motor for a E30 car, cause as you know, its usually way fun-ner to beat on a smaller motor than lug around a tractor lump that doesn't want to rev.

I remember a friend owning one a few years back and him complaining about the rear suspension. I believe it is not the same as a regular 3 series.

rally gods would turn in their graves if they ever knew Lada's were now part of EU rallying!!!

Look up s42 engine - its a bored out M42 16 valve using off the shelf parts from BMW that was used in the DTM cars making close to 300 hp at about 2 liters.

Next Generation 318ti (E36) has this engine, uses E30 rear suspension.

When the old Tarmac Expresses were run here in Chattaboogie, some guy showed up in an M3 engined 318ti hatch body. He stuffed it into a tree with a buddy of mine co-driving. My buddy couldn't hear for a couple of days.

Don't know about the South Africans - will have to look the car up.

The E36 318ti does have an E30 rear suspension, just like the Z3's. There are quite a few 318ti with M3 egines stuffed in there. Easy swap from what I've seen on he bimmer forums but the BMW 6 cyl engine weighs more than a chevy V8 so that would throw off the f/r bias considerably.

The S42 engine was one off kind of thing, no off the shelf parts. Very little can be found about it, some talks about it on the forums but impossible to find parts. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=162133&highlight=s42

It would be easier to just put in the S14 from the e30 M3 than to build that anvil past 160hp!

My question is still if the chassis/suspension in the E36 compact would be any good for rally.

I posted a link to years worth of Finland group F results too with lots of BMW, mostly E36 from what I've observed in videos, 3 series cars with good results.

Here's an E36 for $1000.
http://denver.craigslist.org/car/587461882.html

There's also one of those 'best handling AWD car ever/I'm going to kick every Subaru's ass, at rallycross' AWD BMW things here for sale for like $1200. I thought about buying it just to part out on ebay since their owners seem to be pretty big pervs about how cool their cars are.

Do not name your car.

Do not spend lots of time giving it a hand wash, caressing its curves - take it to a car wash or at least use a brush on a stick when washing it - never use your hands in a mit way to much contact.

Drive the piss out of it then park it hot with out a cool down.

work on what ever bit is the shitty bit that can not be serviced on the car.

Add up the cost of ownership.

let the battery die a few times so that you never know if it will start the next time.

Let mold grow in it.

these are effective ways to keep from falling in love.

PS lots of race preped E36's out there with some bits good for rally...
