Rally Mercedes?
March 12, 2008 03:39AM
I was pointed to this forum by some folks on the GRM message board to try and get some info. I've seen some pictures of old rally mercedes (w123 chassis) but I can't find any info on them, except that they existed. Anyone here know anything about these?

For those of us that have no idea that a w123 is, what was the common name? I have some video's of MB's in rallys here and there. Mr. Mikola drove on in the 1977 Safari for example.

oh right, my bad. the w123 chassis cars are the ones with four round headlights. 240d, 300d/td, etc. As an amusing aside, I found that picture on a site called montanamusclecars.com. Those mercedes had all of 88hp from the factory.

I've seen some old 450SLCs in one of my McKlein books, Mercs are heavy, and diesels are slower than death. I learned to drive in a 240D. Wonderful car to rack up miles on the highway in comfort and economy, but I could never see it as a rally car. I occasionally get the silly idea of finding one of these for a veggie oil car, but several thousand others have already thought of that and driven the price up for anything without Flintstone rockers and floors.

OK, I dug out my Rally Cars (Klein) book, Mercedes 280E/280CE ran some in 77-79, their one win listed was the 1977 London to Sydney event. The cars were really specialty items to run the long marathon events, where brick shithouse construction was more important than maximum attack ability. That and having a large team of German mechanics, engineers and probably several Unimogs full of spares. smiling smiley

Same goes for some early 60s Mercs, and the 450SLC in 78-80.

ok cool, thanks for the info. i've got a 300d now and 80hp doesn't do much for a 3300lb car. if you look around you might get lucky if you're serious about wanting to do a veggie conversion. i got one for that sole purpose and the car only cost me $850 and its rust free. granted, it needed a little love but mechanically, it is sound.

I learned to drive in a 1959 190D. Had it all through high-school and part of college. 50hp, 3000 lbs. 0-60 in 35 seconds. Someone had put a zebra-striped interior into it, and the black stripes had faded to green by the time I got it.

I was pretty notorious around school as it was prone to having the glow plugs go out. I'd have to jump the other three to get it started (they were wired in series), and then that fourth cylinder would just pump unburnt fuel until it got hot enough to fire. Naturally, this resulted in it belching out clouds and clouds of noxious smoke for several minutes.

Unfortunately, it got stuck in a salt water flood at one point and even though it ran fine afterwards the frame started rusting out from the inside.

I've seen some videos of 190E being rallied in Finland, probably in Group F. You may want to search the Finnish rally sites for more information.

I saw one of those 70's 2 door racecars for sale on some exotics website. It was Das Shit. the blurb said those cars were the development platform for the aluminum V8. (!)

I think they were developed for the DTM championship and not for rallying. There were a few guys in the Finnish Gr. F that used the 190 2.3 16V but not sure how successful they were, maybe JVL knows more.

My understanding is that JVL's understanding is they are a bit of a cluster fuck to be polite.
