I found what I believe to be a good starter car. Still having very little rally experience I was hoping to get some opinions from the pros.
Here's the particulars: 1980 celica 4sp RWD(important to me). Last rallied in 03' at Rim of the World. Needs new clutch and new rear bushings. And most importantly, it looks cool! Owner asking 1,300 OBO. http://www.rallyclassified.com/classified.php/listing/1441 I haven't gone to check it out yet, but its not far from where I'm currently living here in Cali. Its no 240, but I think John Vanlandingham will forgive me. |

Hey if the cage is approved, then the price is worth it. That car will have a 2.4 liter 22R, a motor which will be hard to make and compression in due to its really wide open combustion chamber and that will ultimately suck big weenies if you are forced to use domes: See the wird angles and how deep the chamber is? On the other hand with something like this, you'd be styling: Oh yeah, this would make a Celica wake up! Ultimately it'll want a whole bunch of the same things every other car gets. Answer me this tho: what sort of steering and how many turns lock to lock? And just how can it be upgraded to something designed after 1938? (Seriously, if you ever intend to go fast one day, having accurate quick steering is a must, or you're giving your competitors a huge advantage) John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! (Assuming a "standard" wheel angle at lock position, which I realize of course doesn't exist.) 2) Suitability of steering quickeners? (Versus an actual quick rack?) Anders Grassroots rally. My old '69 Saab was 2.7 stock, but I used the rack used up thru 68, which was 2.2. GrA rwd and 4x4 Sierra racks are both 1.9, and that IS via quicker ratio even if there are some 10mm nylon limiters on the rack bar on my GpA rack. I know Sub-a-rat GpA racks were 1.9 turns or 2.0 In trutch an accurate 2.6 or 2.7 is pretty damn good, and I'm always saying we should be ahappy if we can get "pretty damn good". Some Roman siad it 2000 years ago "The Perfect is the Enemy of the Good." > > 2) Suitability of steering quickeners? (Versus an > actual quick rack?) You get it in and i'm sure they work fine on rack cars. Problem with the old Sillicar is I believe its still whip and capstan or steering oar with god knows what for links going here or there and turning corners, all of them with slop and sloppy mounts. > > Anders > > Raleigh, NC > Impreza H6 3.0 Hey Anders, why'd you never post in your "What other sport is timed like rally" the stuff I was telling you about European format Enduro and US "Six Days Qualifier Series" which is exactly timed like rally? It would have been pretty funny that the one person with the exact answer of a BIKE question is the one person who is banned. We were out this weekend in a turbo Impreza GC8. The owner and two other had gone out two weekends in a row. Between the two weekends, they added a bit more rear toe in, and figured out a way to install a newer STI rack with 2.75 turns lock to lock instead of 3.2. It resulted in faster lap times and an easier, more fun to drive car and all three of them were stoked. Mark went home and was up late, late on Sunday night researching all the different Subaru racks trying to find one that was best.

When I'm looking for the most imaginative replies, I feel like I should put in as little initial bias as possible. I remember the rally taxi too when it was for sale previously. I was considering buying it before I came to my senses and realized I don't really have anywhere to store it. I don't recall ever seeing the car in person though.
I think john is right that those came with some old-fashioned steering, like recirculating ball or some such. You can find the specs for it in some sites on the web by hitting up google. Ha, speaking of which, I found this cool little explanation of how car steering works, showing rack and pinion, recirculating ball, power steering, etc. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/steering3.htm I also recall reading an article that the Focus WRC circa Colin McRae's time driving for them had a 1.5 turn lock to lock steering rack, which incidentally I also recall hearing is a similar ratio to what Formula 1 cars have. This maybe explains why the drivers would get completely beat up and have to put their arms on ice whenever they lost power steering on the rough events. This also brings up the question, where do they get these super quick steering racks, or do they somehow custom make them, and how difficult/expensive is the whole deal? Just curious. ----------------------------- http://www.max-attack.com |

Add in some steering limiters so you can save your CV's if your FWD and you're close to 1.5 I probably went with the wrong ratio - 1.5 would have been better. Maybe I'll swap that out some day in the future .... or after I actually drive it Dave clark didn't like it- too fast for him, but it made pushing it around his shop easier -Jason |

hey Jason...you have a log book for your cage yet?
get one before they start random rule change week again. -trust me....spend the time to do it RIGHT the first time. you are all good on the quickener, we lost a ton of time, even spun a couple times in our first few events without a quickener and a stock power steering rack. do yourself a favor and get setup with John's struts with a shitload of travel and AWESOME top-mounts, build an 02A with a cool guy grearset, do custom tubular a-arms with a shitload of caster built in, oversized ball joints, good tie rods. Beef up the rear beam so it doesn't bend as easily...this is all the shit that I wish I would have done from the beginning without even running the car...and all the stuff that I am trying to retro-fit into the car after the fact, oh well live and learn. -Tom DemonRallyTeam | Fine Tuning | CTS Turbo & RP Turbos | RalleyTuned | JRM | Meister Autowerks Spitfire EFI | Product Apparel | JVAB Imports | NLS | AP Tuning | USRT Add us on Facebook | Next Event: 2013 Olympus Rally June 22-23 Olympia, WA |
