Don't bow too much, some think what you wrote is in it's essence the same WOW GOLLY!! Ain't it AMAZING!!!!!! style hype that is the fundemental problem with how rally is always presented in America which leave the listener with a picture of just another EXTREME!!! spectacle and nothing to identify with----hence the idea of linking the older Gp4 type cars such as Escorts and Fiats and Opels which gives you a segue into HOW THEY COULD GET STARTED---it plants the seed in the mind which can grow into an IDEA!!! that Hey I can do this??!! Wait! I can do this!!!!!!!.

Come on!!!

Which could be considered advertising and drawing more people into the sport.

Timm, it's the ONLY thing which has been tried at least as long as I have been around US rally so about um 25 years, and oddly enough 25 years of hype about how scary/unbefuckingliveable/aren't theyall just GODS type crap and we still have entries of about 40 cars average and sometimes and in many places 12-15.

You know the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over

and expecting a different outcome.

When my old sport moto-cross went to full bore ultra hype up everything and pay the top guys 175k a year back in the mid 70s it went from being a MASS SPORT with races everywhere in the whole country getting 400-500 riders to a way less popular sport with 1/4 of that in entries and far few events---and stacks of spectators at STADIUM events.

IDENTIFICATION seems to win more guys over than trying to amaze them especially if you hype the shit out of it then they go out and see the local and "National" scene and its nothing at all like what they were hypped into believing it would be like.

The problem with rally here is massive.

Where do you start?

I think the first thing that needs to be scrapped is this whole notion of a national series.. It's stupid. It works in smaller countries just fine, but how many times wider and longer is America than Finland?

Here's a overlay comparision map and you can scoot it around to get an idea like I placed Stockholm at where Houghton MI is cause i know milages from there.
http://goeurope.about.com/od/europeanmaps/l/bl-country-size-comparison-map.htm

Pretty easy to understand how INTENSE everything is in Europe when you reflect there are over 350 million people in Europe and most are in Wewstern Europe and then you look at the size of the place.

Maybe this works:
http://maps.howstuffworks.com/europe-us-comparison-map.htm

Then think of the sheer numbers of competitiors in each of the countries Ireland England, France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Germany Poland, then the crazy numbers in Sweden and Finland and even Norway you can begin to see why some say the US scene is so massively embarrassing and always has been.

What I'm saying is hype of the "They're so BAAAAAAD, they're Supra-men!!" is the same path which leads you to where we are in USA now.

And you all should always STRESS that one unique thing about RALLY as opposed to all other CAR events is that for most of its history it is primarily just that: a RALLY, a GATHERING open to essentially anybody shows up, not an "exclusive" thing like nearly all track events for cars.

I hear ya, JVL. My intention was to provide some ideas on how to give a presentation which stands out from the others. The idea being to present something interesting which stands out from the what the rest of the class will likely be presenting. Not so much working to entice newcomers to the sport.

Not saying it couldn't be done, but my goal wasn't to promote the sport so much as to stand out from the rest of the class. winking smiley To do a better job of that, whilst adding promotional value and planting a seed of, "Hey. I could actually do this," I would make the focus more about the large numbers of competitors in European contests who run the smaller, less expensive cars, how they persevere through all kinds of obstacles, pressing on to the very end, and demonstrating the true competitive, racing spirit without the need for conglomerate sponsorship or multi-million dollar rides. The spirit of the sport, if you will.

It's what I was hoping to promote during my tenure as Press Liaison for CRS, but my inability to attend most events the latter half of the season and a sort of unspoken requirement to make sure that everyone got their name in the papers with a sort of string of stage-by-stage numbers writing took the wind out of my sails.

In my opinion, rally is attractive to the lay person mostly due to the super fast cars that sling dirt sideways and catch the big air, but I like to think those who have been sufficiently exposed to the sport begin to find themselves enamored with the dedication, the tenacity of the competitors and the like. There is more to "press on regardless" than the words can convey at face value. Rally, as a true form of motorsport, is something of a metaphor for life, in general. Not everyone gets to sail through life like Gates or Jobs, but being smart with what you've got and putting your heart into it from the get-go and never giving up hope results in even the smallest of teams having their day of days.

That's all. I think you're dead on. It's easy to get caught up in mainstream hype, but when the day is done, what matters most is strapping in, getting out there on the stages, and completing the event. There is serious competition at every level, and that competition goes beyond the platform. It's about pushing man and machine to the limit at every level and finding the ragged edge unique to the individual and riding that edge as long as possible.

It went pretty well.... I nearly ran out of time and your docked 8% lfor going over time....

I gave a brief intro about TSD, RallyX, and Pro/Stage Rally. I feigned falling asleep as I described TSD. (snicker!) I then went into the barebones of driver/codriver, time controls/stage marshals/volunteers, (showing pics of me and my son in orange vests for Nemadji Trail) I showed in car of Solberg/Mills on Ommunpojia (sp?) in Finland including the start, the sound of pacenotes, and yumps.

I told of the amount of adrenaline, concentration, and skill needed to compete.

I showed a pic of my son with Travis Pastrana to get a few of the youngins in the back row to be able to relate. smiling smiley

And I ended talking about the different conflicts that rally encompasses.

Man vs Man
Man vs Self
Man vs Machine
Man vs Nature

And I barely scratched the surface of what I wanted to talk about.

I think I got an A though. And I had guys coming up to me after class wanting to know when the next local rally was.

Thank you again for the help fellas!
