how does media blasting do on that nasty under coating stuff? anyone ever tried that?

After the idaho snafu and subsequent "I drive like a mildly retarded ape" technique in oregon was gonna prep a new car, but actually try and do some of the nasty stuff first, instead of after a year of racing it... hehe

there's a dude up in woodinville that's done some bead blasting for resto projects that I've kibitzed on and was thinking of having him blast the shell before it gets caged and then prime and paint the whole bloody thing inside and out at once.

If the consensus is that it doesn't work, I may be looking for a loaner on the death ray for stripping the new car, whenever I buy one.

Dooooood the rubberized sound deadening/undercoating is like rubber.
Media bounces off. I tried all sorts of crap including "Black Beauty" super viscious shit and it was PAINFULLY slow, painful because the shit bounces backs and abrades gloves, and piles up like snow drifts.

It is simply put the hot shit.
Quick, easy, and considering that time is money, cheap.

And sure you can barrow it, as soon as its back in town.

FWIW, there's a local powder-coating shop that will perform the following service.

*Bake car shell in oven. Removes ALL paint, seam sealer, and undercoating.
*Lightly sandblast shell.
*You can then take your car home, seam-weld, install cage, etc.
*Bring car back, they will re-blast it clean.
*They will then powdercoat the underside and interior completely.

All for about $900-$1000.

The added bonus is the total weight of the powdercoat is about 50-60 lbs lighter than the stuff they burned off. Oh, and the cage looks REAL nice. Much easier than painting inside and underneath the car.

OK that sounds awesome. I'd gladly pay $1000 to have a shell that clean as a starting point. If that service exists in the northwest somewhere John, any idea?

Yeah.
We need to get together at another CCCP beer drink and yakking session cause there's a number of guys that need a bunch of help to get their cars back in the woods or to finish them off so they're ready.
I talked to TomB, and Dave Clark, and William "Steel Solutions", and a bunch of other guys and I've been suggesting we need to go "Back to the Future" and do what we used to do 20+ years ago: get together a whole gang of guys for "Barn raising" style attacks of cars and collectively LEND A HAND stripping and cleaning and welding up stuff.
That's one area where simple semi-skilled manpower can be applied and really cut down time.

Let's start a new thread and get a little meeting and make efforts to show up.

I's going to China on the 12th so lets get together before I go.

I just made a "death ray" (a stainless steel one ) and Al is stripping his Volvo shell as I write this. It's ridiculously easy... Sadly I don't have my camera here to take any pictures. Maybe tomorrow.

for christ's sake! the death ray is my new favorite. Sooo easy, sooooo fun. Three hours and $300 got rid of it all. And TOTALLY non-toxic! compare that to days of wire wheelimg it into black death dust (that sticks to your windows, and your lungs). I can't even imagine a solvent that cound cut that crap.

when you get it right it leaves metal ready to paint, a little sanding disc and you are welding. There were many tens of pounds of that junk put into the garbage can.

JVL speaks the truth. its the shit.

The next day it was really tempting to crack the valve and spew a giant white cloud of left over nitrogen out of the back of the truck when I went to pick the kid up from school...

This is how the Saabfarm guys do it...it's pretty cool to see the results of their work in just a weekend. It's probably about the only reason I'd actually want to live in PA again.
