I'll post up some video tonight. It was a fun weekend.
Friday we finish up the cars, head down to Canon City, pitch the tents, cook up some buffalo burgers and corn on the cob, drink a bunch of beer (about 20-30 of us were camping at the service area), go to bed and sleep on the lumpiest ground of all time. Was up at 6 am, a bit hungover and really tired so we can do the driver's meeting. First car is out at 8 am. Rally cars are near the end so we have time to drink some coffee and some tea and smoke a bunch of ciggies. The first two runs I was super conservative, had the boost at 12 lbs or so, my time was a 4:19, which was ahead of one or two, but near the back of 2WD. Second run I pushed a little harder, my codriver was getting better with the notes and ran a 4:11 or so. Go back down and decide I want to step up the boost a little. My plan all along was to start low, then go to 15 for two runs, then up to 18 for race day. Adjust it up, test it, it's at 16-17 so I turn it down a little bit and get ready to race. Sitting two cars back from the start and the radiator fans aren't turning on. We pull over and Scott and I fuck with it for a little bit and they won't switch on. I had them run through the AC fan relay and later we found we'd melted the fuse. So were sitting on the line and I'm like, well, let's just go for it and if we have to stop midway we'll stop. Take off on the line and whoa! Whole different animal. So much more power suddenly and pulling extra gears where I couldn't before. Watching the temp gauge the whole time and we're super hot and had to drive past the finish line for a few miles running the heater at full blast and pouring water onto the radiator to get the temps back down. Time was a 4:05 or so. We rewire the fans back in the service area and install a Hella light relay to switch them and put in a fuse at Scott's feet to turn them on and off by removing the fuse, do the final run and run a 3:57. End of the day and time to eat some dinner and drink a bunch of beer again. Had a good size fire and went to bed early because it was really cold (overnight low in the 20s). Run 1 on Sunday goes well, pushed in a few spots, getting better at setting up for the hairpins, but the car keeps dying coming into them, but luckily just pop the clutch back out. Car dies three times on that run, but really doesn't cost us any time. Run a 3:56. Run 2 starts out awesome. I was going for it, taking some chances and felt really good. There's this long straight over a jump that had about 100 yards after it over a crest drops into a hairpinish right. I braked way to late, threw it sideways to scrub speed, car died but since I'm fully sideways and the wheels aren't rotating I can't pop the clutch to restart it. Come to a stop, fire it up with the ignition, and finish the run at a moderate pace. I figured I'd already fucked it, so why take chances. Ran a 3:57. Ended up with 5th out of 10, but I think I could have pulled off 3rd or 4th without the stall. It was super fun though, there were 4-5 of us 2WD guys really close in time and trying to push each other. The biggest stand out to me though was how crappy the final drive in the car is and how I can't wait for the JVAB Supra conversion to be done. And how much the 123 mile drive to and from the race in the rally car was. And how much fun the car is. It can and will win. It's a bit hard to drive fast and large for the really narrow tight stuff, but feels so amazing in the faster and flowing sections. The suspension, brakes, cooling system, everything worked so well all weekend. Grant Hughes |

There was also alot of extra money spent for some really fucking stupid reasons.
The forms on the internet had wrong addresses and some didn't have the correct pricing for memberships so a bunch of us owed the $25 late fee for not getting in our forms and entries entirely complete. One teams didn't show up because they'd sent it to the wrong address. Then there was the volunteer thing. All competitors are required to provide one volunteer for one run. Lots of rallyists assigned to have volunteers for this event. Quite a few double assigned, quite a few that didn't know they had to provide a volunteer, one volunteer couldn't find the dark tinted window, unmarked timing truck, I worked as my own volunteer on scales for most of one run, and had some friends take over when I had to leave to drive. The best part is that they have a rule that if your volunteer isn't present when needed, you owe $100 prior to being allowed to race any more that day. They made a few hundred off the rally cars this weekend from this rule. They also were quite unfair to our volunteers, such as when they let the two Stock car volunteers leave once their cars were done on the scales, but made the rally volunteer stay. Or the timing woman making the rally volunteer stand outside in the wind and occasional rain and being straight up rude to our volunteer. Of course, we are happy to deal with any of this occasional nonsense though because we really do enjoy racing with this organization and most of the people involved, volunteering, and competing are awesome. 5 different AWD cars broke the old record from last year. Not sure how many, but there were quite a few rally cars in the top times overall. I know 2nd and 3rd overall were both rally cars. The rally cars seem to be becoming more popular with the spectators as we get faster and push harder. We were the biggest class with something like 21 cars at the event. Grant Hughes |

Looking forward to the pics and video. So used to seeing this Xratty parked. I would love to see it getting down. Sounds like minor issues with the fans, but electrical gremlins can be hairy. Best of luck with ironing out those guys and getting back out there soon, Grant. :thumbsup

Nice!! so maybe I missed something, but why were you stalling in the corners again?
that volunteer rule is an expensive little thing, eh? never heard of that, I assume its venue specific? Jon Burke - KI6LSW Blog: http://psgrallywrx.blogspot.com/ |

Organization specific rule.
Bad throttle control valve/wiring possibly. Could be I'm too hard on the brakes and too slow on the clutch and with super human leg strength and burly brakes, I can easily lock them up and if the clutch isn't in, the engine stalls. It was mostly happening in hairpins. Come in hot, brake hard and get the car pointed away from the hairpin, car would stall (codriver didn't even notice it though), pop the clutch (firing back up the engine) and rip through the corner. The fans were sorted out right away. Pulled a Hella light relay out of a competitors car and rewired my fan more properly. Grant Hughes |

No. I was running on between 3/4 and full tank. It was dying though on the 123 mile 'transit' from the race back to the shop whenever I'd put the clutch in to stop, which led me to think it may have been the idle air control valve. At the event, like I said, it only happened under the really, really fast to hard braking to 1st gear to hairpin, which happened to be the times when I was on the brakes the hardest on longest, but also had the clutch in the longest technically now that I think about it.

Pics are posted in the milestone thread, but they have copyright junk on them so view at your own risk. |
